Help me choose a daily runner

Hi guys & girls

I'm making this thread as I am confused.

After driving my NA daily for 2 and a half years I'm now looking to get a second car to use every day. This way I will be able to show the supra some more love (being able to have it off the road) and actually enjoy my self when out in it as at the moment I spend most of the time driving her stuck in traffic.

So I am looking for something that is relatively cheap to run, but also want something that is a decent place to be in. I preferably need 4/5 doors and a decent size boot. Good mpg and not too slow.. I have a 4K budget.

Do you have any suggestions?

I am looking at 6-7 year old diesels and I quite like the look of the 2009- mazda3, mkvi Golf and hatchback lancer. To be honest I feel a bit spoiled for choice but on the other hand my knowledge for diesels is very limited. I don't want to make the wrong decision. They are all around the 100K miles mark but I'm assuming this is very low mileage for a diesel engine? On the other hand opinions on internets are very mixed. It is confusing. Any advice from personal or not experience would be appreciated.

I got a 2007 5 door Civic 2.2 turbo diesel as my daily which I would recommend as you can pick them up for around £2k get mid 50's to the gallon and with a £200 remap at radical remaps it pushes 186bhp with 270ib/ft torque so although not fast its no slouch either as far as dailys go :) im not keen on the look of them myself but does everything I want out of a daily and is very spacious inside too for boot room and back seats room.

Do you do enough miles each year to warrant running a diesel? Around 12,000 miles annually is a very basic guide to the cut off. You'd be surprised how many people are better off with petrol (which is also far nicer to drive...) and diesel is just about to become far more expensive still.

Everyone hates diesel. :)

Thanks for the input guys!

I also used to hate on diesels and I never had one, but the mpg/power you get seems to be worth it?

I do 10 - 15k a year.

The honda is indeed a good shout. I went and viewed a couple. That's the sort of thing I am looking for, but I am trying to find something a bit more appealing looks wise. The avensis, accord etc are a bit too big for my needs.

Anyone had experience with the vw 2.0 TDI? Looks ideal for what I want and the interior quality seems superb. I am a japanese fan my self but might look to try the germans for a change.

I'd be swayed to get a petrol. I do around 18-22k a year and previous experience with used/high mileage diesels has been horrible. Might save a few hundred pounds a year in fuel but a new egr valve/turbo/injectors/dpf/flywheel wipes out any saving, especially if you're mostly stuck in traffic? The only diesel I miss driving was my Alfa 159 Ti

My daily is a mk4 Ibiza 1.8T FR, quick enough and does 30mpg and touch wood not a single thing has gone wrong with it!

back in the day I really slummed it.......list of my daily's (more commuters really) over the last 8 or so years.

205 Diesel

205 Turbo Diesel (loved this!)

405 Turbo Diesel

another 405 Turbo Diesel!

Volvo V70 2000 2.5TD (3 years)

Currently Volvo XC60 (flusher now and so go something more modern with working aircon!)

Up until recently they were all really cheap, ie bangernomics style, all with 45mpg ish or better averages.

I think I lucked out with the very simplistic Pug Diesels, just flipped them or scrapped them on an MOT, the V70 really impressed me and lasted over 3 years (not remarkable for the Volvo, just for my usual boredom threshold)

The current one, I have to say I'm more nervous of as it's more money tied up in it and being nicer you want it to stay that way, plus it's got the usual modern diesel worries of DPF's and DMF's but it's a relatively old proven D5 engine and so far so good, it's certainly a nice place to sit and relaxing, a great contrast to the Supra.

I've always gone diesel as the focus was always on MPG/cost, it's not so much now and I'd consider a (still dull/frugal) petrol next time

Thanks for all the replies!

Dnk, thanks for the links. Diesel one not really to my taste and the petrol is more powerful than the supra - Unacceptable!! lol

Thanks for the effort though! I will have a look at leons

All this diesel vs petrol talk is getting my mind more mixed up. I guess I have to do more research.. Do you have any nice petrol cars in mind that deliver good mpg and are in the 130-170 bhp range? Could settle for less if I like the looks.

I am going to view this today:

Mazda 6 2.0 petrol will do 40mpg if driven easily 147bhp, don't particularly like the car the way it drives but it is an estate! Maybe a Mazda 3?

I prefer the Auris 2L D-4D motorsport addition 17miles from your postcode, private sale, £1000 less before haggle and half the miles full Toyota history?

Toyota didn't make a 'Motorsport Addition'. It's a modified car, and also the Auris is one of the worst cars I've ever driven. Can't imagine many things further from motorsport!

I only added that bit as it would help him find the advert. I never driven one but it can't be that much different to the golf can it!? Daily driver lower running cost and risk was my thoughts, hence the advice.

I'm currently using a 2.2D X type, which is a brilliant motorway car (90% of my miles are motorway). Has a modicum of prestige (?) and does 37 mpg all driving (and about 45 mpg motorway). It has a mondeo engine and running so is relatively cheap to maintain. Only box it doesn't tick for you is boot space, which is average at best. I never really want to drive anything other than the Supra but I need to for practical and cost reasons so it could be worse! Lol
