Samurai 20V
Hi Guys.. Recently picked up some leaks on the power steering rack, near the pinion and the boots. Search on here says not a good idea to overhaul the rack, rather replace. New is crazy money, not sure if the supply is still there either. Are there any other options, replacement part that anyone knows of? Thanks.
np89
You should be able to have it reliably rebuilt and the gasket kit is readily available at reasonable money so it definitely is possible. Id say it depends on who you use to do it more than rebuilding the rack itself being a good or bad idea. Hope this helps!
Digsy
I looked into this a loooooong time ago when I had a weepy rack which (thankfully) cured itself. As alluded to above, getting a professional; refurb done will be mega bucks, and also you would probably have to send your rack off to be repaired and wait for it to come back. In the past I have bought reconned racks for other cars on an exchange basis, but Supra racks are rare enough that I found this approach was not practical. I *think* I even have the complete strip down and rebuild instructions for the Supra rack and I sriously looked at installing the seal kits myself, but I found that there are so many special tools involved it was a non-starter as a DIY job. Mind you, at the time I needed the car on the road, so if I had alternative transport I may have given it a go. In the end I found a 2nd hand rack locally, but as my leak fixed itself it sat in my garage for several years before ending up in a skip! j_jza80
Are we sure the Supra doesn't share a rack with the GS300, Soarer etc?
np89
Are we sure the Supra doesn't share a rack with the GS300, Soarer etc? I've just crossed the part number there now for all 3 revisions of the steering rack and it only lists for a supra unfortunately:(

Jellybean
Its not too bad, 1K from Amayama , and 849 Dollars from Elmhurst Toyota , by the time you pay a specialist garage to refurb it and seal kit ; I reckon you may not be far off 1K but at least with a new rack everything will be 100% , if your old rack had a lot of dirty oil though it for years , scoring of metal parts may occurred and a seal kit will not help, safest option If funds are an issue , why not try some lucas rack and pinion stop leak in the interim http://lucasoil.com/products/problem-solvers-utility/lucas-power-steering-stop-leak https://www.amayama.com/en/search?q=44250-14210 http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1002913-steering-rack-and-power-steering-pump-95-na-supra
T2 MSW
Were can you order the Lucas stop stuff from? I may try this before accepting I'm going to have to rip the rack of the car and replace it.

I enquired about having this done with a local specialist who actually subcontract out to a company called CPS Drivelink who will fully strip down and refurbish the rack with all new internals and seals and refinish it cosmetically for a total cost of £142.50 plus vat and a £15 carriage charge. They are based in gateshead. Also comes with a 1yr warranty Hope this information is helpful
Samurai 20V
Thanks guys. The rebuild kit is not that badly priced, I am evaluating a local rebuilder to see if he is up to the task. With the exchange rate here, the new rack out prices itself vs rebuilding. But will clean the rack up at first and then re inspect to confirm it is leaking. Sheefa
I bought some Lucas stop leak but was advised not to use it by a few people. It just masks the problem and apparently will cause other issues. I would avoid unless it is your last resort before replacing. I only have a minor leak mind so no need to use it. Chris Wilson
If I didn't have a fear of being sued, or getting the forum owner sued, I would regale you all with wonderful stories of a friend who spent year working for various steering rack and C/V joint rebuilding companies around the UK. I would buy new if still available, or a known good used one if cheap. These are old cars that have had a lot of filthy fluid though the rack, and many have been made to work overtime on silly rims with incorrect offset putting fearsome loads into them. Rebuilding the pumps is one thing, buying all the parts to properly rebuild the rack itself will be close to a new one, even without labour. alxns7
One fix for my leaking rack that did it for me was putting back the stock steering oil cooler (I had no cooler when I bought the car and I'm pretty sure this made it leak)
pedrosixfour
I've a good used unit here if you want it mate. I won't say for certain that it was as dry as pepper, the nearside was damp (not leaking) on removal, but that may be just due to the return pipe that burst on that side at one of the last times the car was at the track. Let me know if you have an interest or would like to know anything else.

pedrosixfour
It is from a 1995 SZ-R. Car was at the 160,000km mark when I pulled it to pieces. Rack had one new inner rod end fitted prior to the car taking to the track and it has been faultless in every way since.
