Photo storage

I would say external hard drive, or archive-grade DVDs.

I investigated this a while ago, and the long-term robustness of standard CDs / DVDs is uncertain. Depends what "lots" is really. Gigabytes? Terabytes?

A strong solution would be a 2-drive RAID device, but it might be more hassle to set up than you're willing to put up with. Once set up, it'll be as easy as any bog-standard external hard drive. This would give you the longevity of a hard disk (which is surprisingly good for a fast-spinning magnetic platter!), and the added protection of RAID if one of the disks develops a fault.

Google photo's, unlimited free online storage if you go for standard quality. Or x amount of GB free if you go for HD quality. If you map your drive or smart phone it will instantly back up too.

Plus external hard drive

Benefits of above is you have multiple back ups and google photo's allows you access anywhere.

Appears to be ok, as CW external hard drives can 'just' fail. I have had 2 fail on me and there only function was to sit on a shelve and never move storing my films, but they went pop.

Oh and the one you linked to, you can get it cheaper here with free delivery http://www.ebuyer.com/746391-maxtor-d3-station-2tb-usb-3-0-external-hard-drive-hx-d201tdb-gm

Might get it cheaper elsewhere, but ebuyer or amazon is go to place for price comparison for me.

I backup monthly to my external HDD - theyre cheap enough and reliable. I took one in the back of a van to Mongolia (where it was rattled around considerably) and it was fine

But will it still be fine in 12 years time when you take it out of storage and try and power it up? I went to tape as none current tape drives are not too bad a price, and none highest density new old stock tapes are very cheap. I thought, what do the banks and big institutions use, did some asking around, and the answer was a resounding "TAPE". It was a fiddle finding good but cheap software, but i use Z-DBackup and it's easy to use and regularly updated, plus it is not gigabytes in itself. An external Tandberg SCSI tape deck was about £180.

I see your point, not sure about 12 years, but my current drive is 6 years old and is still going OK. However I have heard of failure rates being fairly high comparatively though. Even if the HDDs die, as long as the physical disc isn't knackered its not too hard to get them repaired (the mechanicals are relatively simple). Tape is a pain for home users because of the physical space it takes up and the inability to write twice to it. So you end up spending a lot of money considering you can pick up 1TB of rewrite-able storage for £50 which can fit in your pocket. You should also leave tape in a controlled environment because damp etc can also ruin them (the big companies I know of that use tape keep them all in climate controlled fire-proof safes).

Depends how crucial your data is in 12 years time I guess - I don't want or need "proper" archival (like with tape) because a lot of my files are live and will change. I would assume most others are similar.

All of my photos end up on Google Drive (I have 1TB free with work) so I dont have to worry about those until Google go bust :D Another good place to "archive" photos is actually social media - while they don't keep the original quality and whatnot, if you're looking to keep photos etc as a "keepsake" then Facebook or whatever is a great way to go - you can put them on without needing to do the whole sharing with friends thing, and can download them all in one big batch (lets say Facebook went bust) so you still have all of your photos.

For storage at home, I do NOT use single drive units! I have had 2 fail and only because I have multiple backups was I able to recover the photos. I now use a Synology DiskStation with RAID. So it does its own internal backups. The only worry is if something happens to the device, fire or stolen.

Im not a huge fan of the online storage too many T&Cs and quite honestly I dont trust them. I only use it for sharing photos that I have no issue with anyone viewing........ ;)

This: External drive with RAID. Relatively cheap, upgradable if you pick the correct unit, and simple to maintain.

I have two ReadyNAS RAIDS. My 4Tb unit holds all my data inlcuding my media library, and is RAIDed across 2x 4TB disks. My older unit has 2x 2TB disks and stores a backup of everything apart my DVD rips. The two NAS's talk to each other and handle the backups between themsevles so there is no need to run any kind of backup software on my PC.

I think the cloud storage will wait for everyone to get reliant upon it and then start jackingup the prices. I am using my free OneDrive allocation at the moment for (non naked) pictures taken with my phone. :)
