Gaming Reviews Anyone?

Recommended Posts

So after scrolling through this section of the forum, I came across the two threads started by Scott regarding movie/tv programme reviews and thought, why not start one about gaming (Okay okay, I know, pretty geeky).

I like nothing more than the odd hour or two gaming sesh when I've completed all the jobs my wife has left me, so I'll kick things off with the first review.

I have been struggling to find something to play for a while now, all the good games appear to be coming out towards the end of the year, but a friend suggested Overwatch. I will review this because it's the most recent game I have played not the best one:

OVERWATCH PS4 - Purely online game with 21 characters to choose from (my favourite is Bastion). Each has their own strengths/weaknesses and their own set of powers. They cannot be customized in terms of weapons but you can collect different appearances and stuff. You play 6v6 games whereby you are either attacking to complete an objective (secure checkpoints, escort a vehicle from A to B, etc), or defending to stop the attacking team. Game is OK but hasn't really got me hooked. Good for killing a bit of time but will be sold once something better comes out! 7/10

Anyone fancy reviewing a game if you're a bit of a geek like me, feel free! Hopefully, if this takes off, maybe get a team together for the upcoming Battlefield 1 (PS4).

Cheers guys!

If anyone is intreeged on a game Ive more than likely played so I am also happy to give opinions on the title in question :)

How do you find time for anything else ? You must be single with no kids right ? I would love to have 4 hours aday gaming playing with myself ;)

I have a GF, no kids and go to bed at 2.30am everyday :D I make the time lol

Some days off I run a 10 hour haha feel pretty dirty after those.

I did that last weekend (car insurance this month, means I'm eating baked beans and turning the lights off at 8!) so that I didn't spend money going out instead. It's exactly how I imagined my adult life when I was 13. :D

haha Brilliant, I think games are worth there price tag with the amount of time you can spend on them, we pay £13 to go the cinema for a 2 hr movie but we clock up 48 time that amount on a lot of games, I'm just trying to platinum Mad Max which has given me over 4 days (96 hours) of game play, and great gameplay it has been :D

You know what 2nd review on its way ;)

Game: Mad Max

Platform: PS4

I’ll start this buy saying how much I have enjoyed this game; I have clocked up over 96 hours on it so far and counting.

It consist of a vast open wasteland set in Australia with many locations and side activities to complete finding myself engrossed to doing that over the story missions. Even though looting camps for collectables can feel quite repetitive, you get a satisfaction of which is most pleasing while doing this.

The brutal deathly batman style combat building combo moves and carmageddon style driving was most entertaining.

This game being realised around the same time as the movie you would expect it to be based on the modern movie but that is not the case. What the developer and Warner Bro have done is mix the old movies in with the new so your enemies are based on the new ones but yet Max looks like the original so it’s sure to please all fans of the Mad Max series.

The story is simple, Max gets his infamous Interceptor taken from him by the head thug of the wastelands and he wants it back. You work your way through the missions racing cars, killing, beating and everything you can with no remorse to get your Interceptor back!

You meet many characters upon your journeys that will help you progress in the game and you must help them. Building and upgrading ally’s strong holds of which you can safely stay.

A great addition to this game is to build your own “Magnum Opus” which is your own custom wasteland vehicle. You add upgrades, customised weaponry and cosmetics of which you roam this massive map with killing all in your path.

This is upgraded by spending scrap you get rewarded with and loot.

Max is also upgradeable with the same way your magnum opus is using scrap to increasing armour, fighting skills, looks and his unforgettable shot gun.

Max will earn griffa tokens through completing challenges though out the game (i.e: break 3 enemy jaws)

This is how your character with increase heath, fighting strength, making petrol last longer ect.. I guess you can class this as increasing perks.

There are 4 different bread of enemy all having their own cars and different cars within them making the variation of vehicles vast. These vehicles you can take in a GTA like fashion but with your magnum opus you won’t want to ;)

There is no multiplayer aspect to this game except 1 thing which is competing the death run races scattered about the wasteland were you do not race other players but your fastest time will go up and you can try and beat there times.

The wasteland worrier max is a lonely one that lost his family and is pissed off (hence Mad in the name) So by not having a multiplayer feature I felt not having multiplayer tied into the game was well suited.

But with all games it has its imperfections. The game as a little riddled with bugs for example once I jumped randomly about 100ft in the air causing me to die on my landing also when fighting max would get caught somewhere and he would just randomly die.

But it was never a major problem with the game always auto saving.

The driving can take a little getting used to with the odd camera panning not being quick enough.

Max can jump but not very high. The jump is more to get you off a piece of metal your stuck on ect, but there is climbing but only when marked on the yellow painted rocks and ladders to get you through the camps. I fell in many cases an uncharted style of climbing may have led to certain times less frustrating times “JUST OVER THE BOX MAX ITS WAIST HEIGHT” rather than find another way round, but I guess they did that on purpose to work your way around the route of that camp, but during the free roam wasteland better climbing would have made exploration a little more easier.

If you love the batman games and the Mad Max movies you will love this game.

I like the mad max movies and batman games but loved this game.

If give it a 8 out of 10.

They couldn’t have done this game any better as far as it can go for a Mad Max based title.

For the price you can pick it up for now I highly recommend buying it.

Thanks for reading 

I try and squeeze in some time on the PS4 every now and then and at the moment I'm playing Destiny but I'm patiently waiting the release of COD 4 on the PS4.

Saying I was hooked on this game when I had my XBOX is an understatement and I got pretty good at it.

Looking forward to the reviews in this section though. Great idea.

I watched a friend play Mad Max for a while and it looked like a hell of a lot of grinding to me. The sort that would bore me quickly, I need games to progress fast/mix things up or I'll just turn it off. Enjoyed that review though, 96 hours is a lot of time spent on one game! :D

My brother has also jumped back into WoW with the latest expansion pack being released. He said it's brought the game back to life quite a bit and is enjoying it again.

+1 for Destiny here, good mechanics, fun FPS. if you liked Halo, you'll probably like Destiny as well, still loads of content to go for me before I can even consider the latest expansion.

I currently cannot wait for the MW remake, I have hated every one since MW2 as it has gotten stupid with all of the jumping about etc. So can't wait to get back onto this online for some search and destroy.

Looking forward to FF15 as I love the RPG type games, although none come close to FF7/Xenogears.

Funny that I hate Halo, one of the worst games I have played but I loved destiny, clocked up about 600 hours on that. But I don't think I will get the latest expansion

I'm playing Rimworld on the PC at the moment. I've put 42 hours into it so far.

It's a management game where you control some survivors who have crashed on a planet. Every unit has randomized traits and skills meaning they're good at some tasks but not others, and all have their little personality quirks which means you have to manage them properly. When you start the game you can choose a position on a map in different biomes which all have their own challenges for even more variety. You grow food, hunt animals, build stuff and fight off various raids from tribes and pirates or random events like heatwaves and try to keep your units from dying or going crazy. The difficulty scales depending on how advanced your colony is so it gives you a chance to get established. Eventually you can build a spaceship and escape the planet but I think it's more fun to just play on forever until I get bored of that specific colony.

Easy enough on the lesser difficulties and when everything is going well, you can focus on expanding your base and setting up defences, but when things go wrong they can get really bad very quickly. It's definitely possible to have everybody die in a single raid and having to reload (or start a new colony on permadeath mode).

It's still in alpha but is good for what it is - I haven't encountered any bugs so far but there is some lack of variety and once you've built up your base and got to a stable position it runs out of steam a little. The UI can be a little clunky and confusing at times but hopefully this will be improved on in future. There are a lot of mods available for it if you want a change from the vanilla experience.

I'd rate it 4/5.

I am gaming mental - however I am a PC gamer predominantly. Currently my gaming room doubles up as my study while I finish my PhD, which really sucks as I can't game without feeling guilty!

One game I played recently definitely needs a mention:

Invisible Inc - turn based stealth game, randomly generated levels. Very well made game, short story but the game is designed so that you play the same story over and over on differing modes/settings (since every level is RNG). The turn-based element makes it relaxing while being stressful at the same time, which really got me hooked.

Yes sir. Was awesome that and I managed to get into the top 1000 in the world relating to XP (all legit with no hacking) and it had taken away months even years from me which I can't complain about :).

Even to this day, me and a few mates will meet up at one the houses and get a Mariokart, Mario Party and Goldeneye on the go. Such a 'blast from the past' those games.

Not a huge gamer but do enjoy them every now and then.

When I do get chance its either Tanks, World of Warships or Elite Dangerous on a PC, I did recently try a racing game through Steam which meant dusting off the wheel and peddles, cant remember whats it called now but its quite good, racing online against real players, the races were quite long though.

Need to invest in a VR headset but still not sure which way to go, maybe wait and see which one comes out on top, Elite Dangerous in VR is supposed to be very very good.

Party games are my forte! I used to run a computer society where we ran LAN parties for 150 people (pics below).

You want party games? Lets get started!

1. Jackbox party pack - game that you load on your TV through your PC, and play using your phones. You just log on to a website with the code the screen gives you and you get to play. Up to 8 players, it is insanely fun. "Fibbage" is my favourite, basically you have to make up an answer to a random question, and then guess the correct answer. Everyone who guesses your "fib" answer awards you points!

2. TowerFall Ascension - 4 player stage based game where you all have to fight to the death using archery. Very fast paced, quick turn around, another good crowd pleaser. Due to the quick matches, you can incorporate lots of people playing.

3. Lethal League - Another 4 player stage based game, basically competitive baseball where you have to hit the other players with the ball. The catch? The ball doubles in speed every time you hit it! I used to play this competitively as well, so it has two sides to it.

4. Keep talking and nobody explodes! - AMAZING bomb diffusing game. One player has the controller, while the other has a "bomb" manual. The bomb player cannot see the manual and vice versa. Very intense but amazing fun in a group. Produces many laughs. Get the diffuser and the manual reader to swap after a while to make it more silly!

5. Nidhogg - 2 player silly game where you sword fight to the death. Good, but not as good as Towerfall or Lethal League!

6. Sportsfriends - another silly game, 4 player game with several games in 1. Pole vault tennis is one feature. Another is an amazing game called "John Sebastian Joust" which requires PS4 Move controllers. You all have to try and make the other players shake their move controller. Often turns into a kung-fu style brawl. Amazing fun.

7. Gang beasts - 4 player brawler game. The idea is simple, you can punch and grab other players, and have to get them off of the stage. Another intense, silly one for mates to get together on!

8. VIDEOBALL - 4 player goal scoring game. The developers researched the key elements of a bunch of sports, and a bunch of types of game and smashed them together to make "the ultimate game". It combines football, rugby, RTS games and good old fashioned button mashing.

Here is the society I used to run - called LSUCS if you want to look them up! The LAN parties are open to the public and I still attend from time to time.

Jackbox Party is brilliant! Nidhogg is also a good laugh. I'll drop the tone very quickly to touch on a phone app called Heads Up. Pick a category and words are displayed on your phone realted to that category. Person holding the phone can't see it their partner has to describe the word to them. Can be a good drinking game if numbers are good.
