ripped_fear
Just make sure whatever you buy has been serviced correctly. /QUOTE] Definitely full service history is a must. Most the cars I have been looking at are one or two owner cars and ex fleet.
marc_p
Stay away from the 520, look at the 525/530/535, the 3.0 litres engine is where you want to to be, the 520d's have timing chain issues, sound like a tractor and slow as hell, depressingly slow. I had an E60 525d a few years ago and it was a great car, comfy, cheap to run, looked great(may have changed wheels and lowered it slightly ), all I would recommend is getting some swirl flap blanking plates to make sure you don't suffer that problem, garage only charged me £30 to fit whilst it was in for a service. Thanks mate if the 520d is prone to those issue I will definitely stay clear then shame though. Now the hunt for a 525 or 530 with the m sport pack begins. I bought my passat years ago when we had the bad year of snow. Since that day not a single cm of snow has fallen in years lol.

Winter tires fitted of course.
marc_p
Mine didn't have winter tires, but I never found myself stuck, that being said, I stuck to gritted roads, once I tried to stray to an un-gritted road and it did bring the car abruptly to a halt . God you really have me missing that car, it was an 05 and sold it a few years back and I'd still say it was a better car than my much newer E Class, obligatory photo :

I would personally go for the 530.
Krister
Dont get a 520d with N47 engine, the timing chain will give you trouble at some point. It's usually engine or transmission out as the timing chain is in the back of the engine.

I would personally go for the 530. On a facelift E6x this is true. They are 3.0. But on on a pre facelift they are 2.5 litre. Also on a F10/F11 body the 2010 and 2011 model 525d are 3.0 litre, but after that they are 2.0 twin turbo.
skippyboyo1
the 520 is so slow id go for the 530, i know a few mates who have the 530 and zero issues but dont go high miles go as low as you can
