chrex
Hey all, So it sounds like the bearings in my water pump have seen their arse and im going to have to replace it. Im going to go with an oem one from keron as ive been told pattern ones are shoddy. So...question i have, i remember seeing in the past that its a pain to do...does the timing gear have to come off to do the job? Is there a guide someone has done on here for the job? Also, can you get a cool running stat for the supras? Im running an n/a btw. Cheers! Chris
Swampy442
Remove aux belt, remove crank pulley, remove timing belt covers. Loosen and remove cam belt tensioner, remove belt. Unbolt water pump and replace. Do the other steps in reverse

Scooter
Loads of good info here, it's about changing the cambelt but its relevant to your task as the changing of the water pump is a few bolts once the timing belt is off. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?65774-How-To-Change-the-cambelt-(93-J-Spec-TT-Auto)&highlight=cambelt
chrex
Okay cheers. So timing gear does HAVE to come off to get water pump off...no skirting that?
Dnk
I'd be changing the belts at the same time inc cam belt tensioner and the Crank pulley, unless they've been done
Swampy442
With the correct tools and experience its a couple of hours work Okay cheers. So timing gear does HAVE to come off to get water pump off...no skirting that? Yes, the body of the pump is right behind the cam belt
Scooter
Okay cheers. So timing gear does HAVE to come off to get water pump off...no skirting that? You might be able to leave the crank pulley alone and de-tension the timing belt by unscrewing the tensioner from below, not sure if the lower cam cover might be in the way of the water pump. I can understand you trying to avoid it but with the correct tools doing the cam belt isn't difficult and will make good access for the water pump swap. chrex
With the correct tools and experience its a couple of hours work Yes, the body of the pump is right behind the cam belt Oh I've done timing gear before thats not a worry....but if i take a timing belt off, i replace it, which is more ££. As the water pump is ridiculously priced - every little helpa. I take it everyone would recommend staying away from non toyota ones? Or are the bad stories unfounded? Scooter
No reason you can't refit the belt if it looks in ok condition and you know it's not been on there forever.
