My tune for my car has some trouble starting, boosting past 15psi and more things and I can't seem to figure it out for my set-up..

 

I planned on taking it to Sound Performance in Chicago but was going to check forums first.

 

If I were to send someone my tune via email, would anyone look at it and see what's wrong or needs tuned?

 

Or does anyone have a base tune or a tune that is close to my build I could go off of.

 

Stock 2jzgte remanned.

R154 trans with street clutch

HKS adjustable cam gears

Greddy pulleys

67mm T4 .68AR ball bearing

Tial Wastegate F38

750cc injectors

Cold start map may need looked at as the engine is usually warm by the time mapping gets done. That's what happened to me, couldn't even start my car sometimes but got the map tweaked on cold start and it was fine.

 

And as Mike asked, what are you using to control boost? Any idea what your wastegate spring is?

This sounds like my area. I have done the entire map myself with hours of small runs. I need to fine tune my fuel map for more precise AFRs. But something about it just doesnt feel right even though i am getting no timing errors and knock volts are good.

 

I believe its a 10psi spring

A 38mm wastegate seems pretty small for the setup you have, could be leading to boost creep?

 

Are you trying to setup baseline using wastegate spring pressure? If so, the wastegate could not be big enough for the job.

 

Can you tell us what you estimate horsepower goal as well as what max targeted boost pressure?

I thonk you need an engine dyno or at least a rolling road to hold load sites long enough to see what's going on in that area. I am not a fan of mapping on the road. Which is what i am assuming you mean by a "hours of small runs"?

 

Correct lol. Im 3 hours away from any dyno. So I was trying to learn this myself first.

Possibly but since I am using the AEM boost solenoid, I figured spring pressure didnt really matter. But yes the wastegate size in general could be a problem..hmm

 

I want 600hp and/or atleast 20lbs of boost safely and correctly. Max i'd love to hit is maybe 23lbs, not sure if i'm capable of that. Still learning.

If you dismantle the wastegate and lock it open as far as it would under say 18PSI of boost you can see if then limits boost. If not it's as Mike2JZ has said, the `gate is too small. It will struggle to get boost at all in the first place with the `gate locked open, but should get there with time and load.

 

What size wastegate would you rec. for my turbo/setup?

42 or 44mm perhaps, but a LOT depends on how effectively the wastegate can flow (its placement on the manifold runners and how it re-enters the exhaust system). A very badly sited `gate of nearly *ANY* size can cause boost creep. Have you a photo of the assembled `gate on the manifold? Sometimes internally gated turbos can save a lot of grief!

Depends really.

 

You need to test and identify if boost creep is actually happening, as I only made a suggestion. Use chris's test above, or set target boost pressure on controller to wastegate spring pressure, go for a ride and check boost gauge & logs to see if boost is stable or overshooting the mark.

 

If it is boost creep then you need to identify if it's a flow issue (aka, poor manifold design) or if the wastegate is a bottleneck.

 

Looking at your spec, your .68 ar hotside isn't huge and if you are hitting close to your 20lbs of boost target then I don't think 38mm should be a problem, though it's possible at lower boost levels that the wastegate can't keep up.

Alright thanks Mike2JZ. I will look into it and go from there. As far as my tune, if I have good timing and knock volts up to say 15lbs. Just rough cold start and need to tune AFRs more properly. Should I be okay to keep driving every now and then until I can drop it off to Sound Performance?

Hard to say considering I have never seen your car or the tune in real life. All I can say is that if you want to do things the safe way then:

 

I would set boost target to wastegate spring pressure.

Set your AFR target to be slightly richer then the optimal target.

Spend most of your time setting up the fuel map, again edging on being slightly richer and on ignition table, tune is fairly conservatively.

 

With those things taken into account I wouldn't hesitate calmly driving the car off boost until you get a proper tuner to help you out on a dyno.
