ben_harmer32
Ok bit of an odd one to me. 1993 TT auto I’ve done a search and can’t find anything similar to this. When driving my car every now and then I get a strange knocking noise. This does not occur on every drive and seems to be random. The noise sounds like a knock (like something banging against the car) which gets faster the higher the revs go. I can ‘feel’ it when driving through the car. On most occasions the noise seems to start either, when accelerating coming off a roundabout or when I hit around 60-70mph but accelerating slightly harder than normal (but not flooring it). When the noise occurs it’s only on acceleration, if I take my foot off the accelerator it disappears. If I put the car in neutral and rev it I can’t hear it. If a park the car after hearing the noise, put it in park, turn it off and come back later. When I restart the car the noise is gone. The other day I drove 10 minutes up the road and the noise started. Parked it went to a shop came back and drove 30 minutes to where I was going with no noise at all. I am leaning towards an issue with the gearbox possibly? Thought I would ask on here as hoping someone has experienced it before, or may know of a similar issue. Please help Thank you. marbleapple
I'm not mechanically minded at all but surely something is looser than it should be and thus starts knocking under strain. It stops when the strain ceases. From reading other threads people tend to get under their cars and check nuts etc are nice and tight. Dnk
Check all the easily visible parts first, Crank pulley and all other pulleys driven by the aux belt, anything that changes with rpm in neutral, possibly torque converter ? What's the ATF like in the box, level and colour ?
ben_harmer32
Surely if it was something lose it would do it all the time though? As stated it's random, I can floor it one day with no issues, next day the noise turns up under normal driving.

You say the noise comes and goes with revving the engine in neutral hence the first easy thing to do is rule out any part that rotates with the engine while in neutral

It is only when accelerating in drive and not all the time, random occurrences.

Sorry misread you post, time to get the old eyes tested I think what's the ATF like, maybe propshaft, brake calipers would be worth having a close look at incase you have one beginning to stick Go round each wheel after you've been for a drive and feel near the wheel with the back of your hand if ones hotter than the others Edited August 22, 2016 by Dnk (see edit history)
ben_harmer32
I actually have replacement front callipers arriving today as I broke the bleed nipple off one. I will fit them and go for a blast see what happens. If still there i'll check the rears. Cheers!
Chris Wilson
Propshaft joints and seizing calipers come to mind *ESPECIALLY* if they are sliding Jap spec calipers. You may have a cracked disc due to excess heat, or a cracked pad, do as Dnk has suggested and feel all the wheels after a fast run. Examine all the discs especially the rears, for hairline cracks if a caliper is sticking. Also take the pads out and check them.
ben_harmer32
Do you think my caliper was seized? Lol Hope that was the cause of the noise.... Fingers crossed!
Chris Wilson
It will be, those junk Taiwanese drilled discs don't help. They seem made of reconstituted bicycles and are soft as butter, which generates a lot of heat. Whatever, it needs discs and pads, and the caliper pistons and sliders sorting. What are the rear ones like?
fastcar
Looks like you're on to something there! Not looking all that good
ben_harmer32
Fitted replacement refurbished calipers, disks and pads at the front now. Will check the rears tomorrow.
