peter richards
got a tom tom start 50 had it a while , but whats doing my head in is the roads it takes me down small single track lanes in some cases . we went up to ross on wye last weekend with the dog its a place we know , so thought id give it a test , from where we were staying there was a main roed straight int ross time about 5 mins , so set it up and within two miles its had me turn off and pretty much single track lanes again , which tbh is bloody dangerous , , anyway it was actually longer going that way so is there anyway i can tell this thing i dont want anything less than say a b road . i thought it might be taking the shortest route but that wasnt the case last week so im stumped , getting to the stage now i dont trust it . any help appreciated peter
navtrd
Iv used tom toms for years now to be honest there 85% reliable but some cases you have to be careful there's a country lane near me with a road sign stating "sat nav error" takes most people near a river, I think the phone apps these days are quite good plus there live so they show traffic jams and are always up to date so you know were the one way and no entry's are. peter richards
it seems each time i use it i end up on roads where i think the last thing that went down them was a horse and cart, on the said event above we met a hay tracktor had to reverse , and just as we were joining the main road , an artic he must of had the same nav as me lol
navtrd
Try using the sat nav that is available on mobile phones you might find it better running on data connection there more up to date.

peter richards
easy to catch him , just wait down a narrow lane he will be along soon lol, has to be a safety issue , done a bit of reading last night and it seems to be a common problem with them , and other makes . Wez
I find google maps on phone works just as well if not better in most cases, just be sure to have a phone charger in the car
peter richards
gutted as ive wasted my money on this thing, ive been on tom toms site and posted the question but no reply
stevie_b
Make sure your satnav is set to "quickest", not "shortest". I use google maps on my phone, and it's pretty good. Does occasionally take a strange detour, but that's rare.
Style
Burna must be an expert on these by now after all the Dragonball routes he's done with these!
Burna
Burna must be an expert on these by now after all the Dragonball routes he's done with these! Lol Yeah you'd think! But they still drive me crazy sometimes when they have a mind of their own lol I can only think it's one thing, as said above, make sure its set to plot the fastest route, and not the shortest, as to me it sounds exactly what your tomtom is doing Peter. Jive
Waze app is really good. Powered by Google, uses crowd surfing to get traffic information, will reroute if accident ahead and traffic build up is sufficient, even reroutes you back to original router if traffic clears as happened to me the other day and was correct. I use it now all the time, regardless of whether I know where I'm going or not, just for traffic updates and has stopped me sitting in traffic queues more times than I'd like to mention. Is very battery intensive as it polls your location all the time but incar charger is a norm these days. Also, if you've got other people in your address book and they too have Waze, you can send a joint meeting place and it will show each persons eta as they progress. mellonman
Im a tom tom expert and my expert opinion is they are the worst peace of tech out there, mine nearly went out the window several times it now lives in the cupboard was the top of the range, sent me everywhere I didnt want to go sent me on a 10 circle to a station when I was on empty thought I was going to havevto get a jerry can out and 2 foot it , google maps on the phone is twice as good imo
