Tyson
Had the surveyor round yesterday for my remortgage and he pointed out that the neighbours outhouse is made of asbestos concrete. The house is a council property, I get on with my neighbours but I'd want the council to remove it as its broken and we plan on having a family in the near future and I don't want it there. What are my options ? Excuse the temporary repair to my shed roof
Marcus GTE
I think the fact it's cracked will work in your favour, that's when the asbestos particles become exposed so you're within your rights to raise it as a health and safety concern imo. Tricky-Ricky
I think as it encroaches on your boundary, you can raise it as a health issue with the council, but AFAIK asbestos is only considered an issue if its being modified/cut/removed etc.
peter richards
the removal will be the hazard , they dont like disturbing it as the particles are minute
Al Massey
My garage roof is asbestos. Only a drama with cutting, drilling etc It can easily be removed in solid pieces/strips that it's in. The only problem may lie in the cost which the council probably won't cover.
Kendo11
The council will probably reclad it and cover up the asbestos as opposed to remove it. It's more cost effective and councils are tight gits.
Westcoaster
The council would only take responsibility for the asbestos shed if it was theirs and they put it up. If your neighbour erected the shed, they will have to bear the cost of its removal, the council will likely carry out the work and recharge them. trebor69
Asbestos cement, it contains between 5 and 15% Asbestos, it is out of all of the types of Asbestos the safest, its called Chrysotile and consists of curly fibres which tend not to get lodged in your lungs like the blue or brown stuff (this being white). It is only of concern when it is broken or cut, it can be "wet down" but as it does not readily absorb water you need to use an "A strip" solution which then soaks into it and decreases fibre release during cutting/breaking. The "expert removers" will charge a small fortune to remove it and will cut the metal "J" bars that hold it in place, lift it off in complete sections, wrap it in polythene and carry to their van.
