Kristian_Wraae
I bought an Aristo 2JZ-GTE VVTI to convert to VVTI. The engine was supposed to be a 65.000 km unit (somehow they all are......) Anyway looking more like a 265.000 km unit and the oil pan contains metal shavings. How much metal would you expect there to be if nothing has broken? Nothing? Half a tea spoon? I'm filtering all the oil now. I'm of course taking the engine apart - so I'll know in a few days how the bearings look, but what do you think? Kristian_Wraae
This is the amount: It is mostly rusted metal. Is this normal?
evinX
Rusty metal from inside the engine? id be worried. any shaving should of stuck to the bolt. does the oil have metal flakes in it?
Chris Wilson
Looks like it might be sintered metal from the oil pump rotor. Strip the pump if nothing else is obviously knackered.
Kristian_Wraae
I'll take all bearings apart and put a new oil pump as minimum. If I find anything that looks knackered it'll be a complete rebuild (and a good excuse to go stroker....)

You are into a full rebuild if you are looking to do that!

Of course you can argue that changing a bearing that is not damaged is not needed. If there is sign af damage it is a full rebuild.

Kristian_Wraae
Dodgy territory in my book but im no pro! /QUOTE] What do you mean? Last time I got the bearings from Toyota - the right ones according to the markings on the engine and checked all tolerances with plastigage and replaced all the rod bolts with new ones. I agree that you don't replace a broken bearing from say a rod knock because the crank shaft will be out of round. But if nothing is broken you can replace the bearings although one might argue that it is not needed. I just think that if I already have everything take apart to check them I might just change the bearings since they are not that expensive. All bolts must be replaced anyway,
np89
So at which point you would surely just rebuild the whole engine given the bolts and gaskets are not reusable?
