Guest pedro7256
So last night i went out and fancied some heating and to my disapointment the heaters/blower will only come out cold =( is this a common issue of maybe the heater matrix giving up or is there any fault any one has come a cross that would cause this? TIA
drift_bear
Is your passenger footwell wet/damp? Sounds like it could be the heater matrix though
Guest pedro7256
actually yes it is bear! the other half said her bag was wet from being on the floor. what would it mean if i have a damp floor?
Dnk
The matrix has a leak. When the system is cold check your coolant level in the expansion tank

j_jza80
Could just be an airlock in the cooling system, hopefully, but it does sound like your matrix might need changing. Unfortunately it is a big job, and requires the whole dash removing from the car, and ideally the front seats too. It's a full days work if you're handy with spanners, plus you'll need to get your aircon drained and refilled. Not the nicest of jobs I'm afraid. Dnk
i shall do this evening and report back with the findings! TY all Set the coolant to a level marked on the tank and keep an eye on it, if you have a leak on the system it will drop, check it when its stone cold You could pressure test the system as well, have a look at page CO-18 in the link below http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/content.php?60-Cooling-System Edited August 2, 2016 by Dnk (see edit history)

Guest pedro7256
Yea I'm on way home now to play. It was off a private importer from Chessington I'm due to give him a call today so I will ask him see what he says. Apparently he is registered as a dealer and I only got the car this weekend and already found a few questionable bits

Scooter
Things to do if he doesn't play ball, or as damage limitation whilst it's still warm (I wouldn't do it before they've seen it in case they accuse you of tampering) I'd like to get the carpet up to assess the extent of the leak. One popper down in the foot well to release the front of the plastic running board trim and then it pops out/up as you tease it along from the door hinge to the seat. Working right up in where your feet go you can prise back the carpet (lift it out of the body by the door hinge) enough to see front of the floor, you'll get much better access by removing the passenger seat though. Mop up and check coolant level then run with heater on and see the extent of the leak. You can look to disconnect the matrix pipes in the engine bay and link them up together to stop coolant leaking into the passenger foot well. The pipes come from the engine to the passenger side and disappear into the bulkhead very close together. You'll need some pipe/hose and clips combination to rig this up. As others have said the matrix replacement is a very labour intensive job. You could try a temporary repair but it's a bit of a botch even if it works and will almost certainly be er temporary! Thanks Scooter! i was going to take a look last night but ran out of daylight =( I spoke to the seller last night and discussed it and apparently they was working fine for him when he drove the car back a month ago, last night on the lowest blow setting it will pump out a small amount of heat but soon as you try turning it up it just goes cold again. I will take a prob with my big stick tonight and see what i can find i have checked the coolant levels and they seem to be staying the same level but by the sounds of all the reply its gonna be the matrix.... only took a year and a half to change the one in my old BMW lol
Scooter
Well there is this helpful thread if it comes to it.....don't open it until you are feeling brave/positive/optimistic as it's a smidge daunting! http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?127044-How-to-Swap-your-heater-matrix&highlight=Matrix
Chris Wilson
Pressure test the cooling system. Taste the liquid on the floor, anti freeze has a distinctive sweet taste. A genuine Toyota heater matrix core performs MUCH better than some of the Ebay none genuine ones that sort of fit, but need foam packing and don't have enough core density to throw out a lot of heat. j_jza80
The Toyota ones have foam packing too Its not something worth skimping on though, definitely go with genuine. It's just a shame the standard clamps and seals are such a flimsy design.
Chris Wilson
Mercedes ones are always going, and many have two, one either side, and again, a full dash out job. Volvo ones go, and again a full interior dash strip. Whereas the old Jag XJS is a 15 minute job done sat in the passenger seat, with the radio on and a cuppa.... Manufacturers need to address access to heater matrices, IMO.
rider
Thanks all, I have only just got the car so I shall call the person I bought it off and see for they knew and if they did why I was not informed I bought a Peugeot with a leaky heater matrix once. Nasty big bill to sort that out. Its a fairly good reason to sell a car on.
Guest Shodaw
Having the same issue with my recently purchased mkiv. I don't however have and moisture in the passenger footwell. There is a lot of corrosion on the pipes where they enter the bulkhead. Could it just be a blockage as I do have some gunk in the cooling system

Also check this in the passenger footwell
Guest Shodaw
Checked the expansion vessel and all seems fine. No change in level. Checked as per the attached pictures and all is correct and in place. She does get up to temp really quickly but never goes past half way. Looking in the rad the coolant is murky and has bits and the rad looks new so I can only assume it's had an issue at some stage prior to me buying it. Never checked the heater before now so may have been an issue before I bought it. What's the next step to check?
