peter richards
always best by machine, you can do it by hand but it will give an inconsistant finish , is the whole car needing doing or just a small area
marbleapple
Been reading about detailing and all the products today. I'm generally a little cynical about it all but it does interest me. Is the black hole stuff really that good? I was reading about rotary polishers and the complexity of it all scares me!
MattP
Whole car needs a good polish to be honest Peter the marks are minor swirls and hologram marks I always make a mess with the machine polisher. I was going to use some of these white and black hand waffle pads from G3 but need to know what polishes etc and order I should use them. Black hole is lovely to work with but it's a filler product and only masks the scratches etc for so long it's a temporary fix for a show or a quick go over but i really need to sort these swirls etc properly now. Dim Sum
It depends on how bad the paint work is but try the Meguiars 205, I normally use it with a DA polisher and it works perfectly. If the Meguiars 205 don't seem to remove much then the 105 is the next step. Of course once that's done, a good glaze and wax will finish the job. peter richards
trial and error , but unless you have a few option product wise its going to be tough , if its just a few light marks and holos a decent finishing product will get them out without any serious stage work . where abouts are you see if there is a good detailer near . a one stage finishing wont cost a lot , saves you getting stuff and doing it yourself

Mk4Gaz
Personally, I use farecla g10 for minor paint correction. Meguiars swirl x is pretty good too, but for good results, you will need a da polisher. I use a rotary, but have a da in my arsenal for polishing

Ric
3m polishes are best IMO, the secret to machine polishing is often doing it a 2nd time with a finishing polish, usually people use a polish which is too harsh then just leave holograms everywhere. 3m Ultrafina is one of the best I've used at this, they do 3 polishes for various stages inc the pads etc.
peter richards
i use quite a few different products , but for finishing its either 3m ultrafina, dodo limeprime ,or menzerna final finish
peter richards
always do a ipa wipedown after as the 3 m products are quite oily and can fill

Then 3M Ultrafina to get rid of the holograms. Don't need expensive pads or machines - I started out detailing with a £25 DA and £3 pads with 3M compounds working on £50-100k cars everyday. Pete
If you plan on doing the whole car save yourself a lot of time and pain, get yourself one of these: http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/polishers-steam-cleaners/meguiars-mt320-dual-action-polisher-pad-kit Or with the compound/polish bottles: http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/polishers-steam-cleaners/meguiars-mt320-dual-action-polisher-ultimate-kit Very easy for a beginner to use due to dual action head, variable speed, decent build quality. You'll be surprised how many times you whip it out to polish out the odd scratch or car park mark on various cars in the future. I've helped a few mates out with mine now. Only thing is that the cutting compound isn't really hard enough for deep scratches, I'd like to find something more abrasive for difficult corrections. Ric
If you're a beginner please don't buy the meguires one, paying for a brand http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-machines/das-6-pro-dual-action-polisher/cat_81.html This is almost half the price and is very very good, i use one along side my rotary. various polish kits avail. marbleapple
The detailing world forum do some great easy to read guides on their forum. You don't need to be a member to read them. Even learnt about the 2 bucket method and why one should use mitts over sponges. 2 things I had never given any thought to.

That's what I've got, the Pro Plus version, albeit not used it yet. I will be cracking it out in next few weekends. Great price for the kit

MattP
I have been using a rotary for ages on the boat but on car paint I have no idea what speed I should be using for cutting and finishing I have 6 speed settings as you can see below Hook and loop adapter plate Orange waffle cutting pads with black waffle finishing pads What speed should I be cutting (Orange pad) at with this rotary? And what speed with the (Black Pad) finishing pad? Using Megs 205 and 105 ultra cut and finish.
MattP
Anyone?
Ric
Theres never a set speed to use. Just start slow to work the polish around the panel then speed up to make your passes go perhaps half speed and see how quickly the polish breaks down and how the finish is, once you've got a feel for it you could speed up more to reduce the time taken. Just don't press too hard with a rotary or hold in the same place for a long time or you'll burn it.
