Guest Shodaw
Ok so I know it's probably part of second mid life crisis but I do miss the pop and flames my skyline puts out. It's to only thing I think is missing from my new supra. On the 33 it was simply a matter of removing the tiny cat, smashing the insides out with a broom handle and replacing it (until I bought a decat pipe). I've not had a supra before so did a search for decat pipes. All the listings show 2 separate pipes for decat! What's the procedure?
Frank Bullitt
The Supra was fitted with 2 cats, 1st and 2nd. Replacing them both is part of releasing more power but you will need a restrictor ring and boost controller. Click the hyperlink for more info --> BPU. Tim of TB developments (an authorised forum trader) has just released his decat pipes, best on the market IMO. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?333595-Done-my-first-prototype-TB-Developments-3-quot-Decat-Pipe They cost a little more than some of the ones available but the workmanship and quality of material used speaks for itself. E2A I assume you are TT rather than NA? Edited July 3, 2016 by Frank Bullitt (see edit history)
Guest Shodaw
Yup TT, have part fitted an HKS evc5 but just have to sort the plumbing out. Got the fmic and HKS induction just awaiting the new bumper before I start doing stuff
Frank Bullitt
I wouldn't bother with the HKS induction, the OEM set-up is far superior for the TT. Just pick up a TRD or K&N panel filter to replace the stock one.
Guest Shodaw
Ok, ill do that. I'm seriously not up to speed on the supra engine at all, been rb25 for so long it's all alien to me.
Chris Wilson
The reason RB25's often pop and flame is because 90% of them have an air leak at the turbo manifold to head interface because one or more studs have sheared off
Guest Shodaw
I do love my little skybus but now I also have the supra I doubt it'll be used as much. Just want the additional little things that made it fun to drive. Having to get archenemy in to roll the arches as I'm scrubbing a bit but that's no great shame. What's the soloist ion for ecu's and mapping on the supra. Was fairly straight forward on the 33 as the standard was pretty good and the apexi then dealt pretty much with itself after mods. I've ordered the decat pipes but would prefer not to destroy another engine due to mapping
Chris Wilson
MOTEC or Syvecs seem the most popular. If the MKIV TT is a none VVTi manual Apexi do an ecu for it. Any mid to high end ECU can run the manual transmission engine if it has enough outputs to run the sequential stuff. Running the auto box as well from a stand alone ECU is more complex. Running a VVTi Tiptronic fully off an aftermarket ecu is, err, a nightmare... I have seen engines run very well on Link ecu's, too, if you blanche at the price of MOTEC and Syvecs. Guest Shodaw
It's a 1993 mkiv TT auto so in guessing not the vvti.
Chris Wilson
Unless you are going single turbo, (and being an auto it will severely limit the amount of torque you can safely allow the engine to produce, plus you need to mimic the power and torque delivery graph of the stock engine if you want to leave gearbox control under the stock ecu's control), there's little point in an aftermarket ecu. You can weaken the top end of the fuel map if you remove the cats, and maybe add some timing advance if you use super unleaded, but it's a lot of dosh for minimal gains. De cat, freer flowing exhaust, fuel cut eliminator, colder plugs and maybe a new fuel pump and the stock ecu will be fine. Guest Shodaw
Thanks for the advice Chris. No to the single turbo idea as the standard engine I hear is tough as coffin nails if you don't mess with it too much. Have unfortunatly now ordered the decat pipes, have a front mount coming, HKS induction which someone has mentioned I probably don't need, the new boost controller which is mostly fitted, an HKS SSQV as I enjoy the sound they make, a And a few other odds end sods. Just fancied the flames that the skyline has. Not mental flames but just a nice pop on the over run. A reduction in top speed isn't a great loss as in not about to race it, got it as a fun car and something to take to Jae etc as they always look a little more impressive than my old skyline and always loved the shape from back in the nineties.
