Looking for very special permanent home for a young Anatolian Karabash male dog

I am fostering an 18 month or so old, full pedigree male Anatolian Karabash (Kangal) dog. He has been through 4 homes already. He has near zero formal training, but is ultra, ultra clean in the house and kennel. He will sit and sometimes lie down on command. His lead manners are appalling and he is powerful enough to pull most women over, despite wearing a proper choke chain. He is improving, but slowly. He could *not* safely be let off the lead in all but the most securely fenced area at the moment. They are not a breed that could be left unsupervised outside, running free unless you have totally enclosed and fenced land where no one would try and enter unaccompanied.

He's fine with me, and bonded almost immediately. He is seemingly very aggressive towards strangers, and also seemingly has a desire to kill my wife. He was fine with a female friend who is experienced with guarding breeds once the mad barking period was over, and he was properly introduced on a lead. But my wife will not even consider going near him. He is in a kennel and run with a small Bouvier bitch of ours and they get on fine. he would probably want to kill another male dog, although he allegedly lived with a male Staffie early on... They didn't say what happened to the Staffie though ;) All but the most aggressive males will usually rub along with a bitch though.

He needs a very experienced, very confident and patient owner, with NO KIDS, no male dogs, no cats and acreage that's well fenced, as these things climb and jump. Rehoming will be a nightmare, as he is untrained, yet has reached the "delinquent" age. They really need a lot of training and socialising from 7 weeks until adolescence and beyond. This one hasn't had that luxury :( He could be brought round, with me he's loving and sort of obedient, and wants to try and please.

He is a BIG BIG dog, and as such needs very firm handling, and someone that knows how to think "guarding breed" before he catches you unaware. I have had Anatolians for years and have a bitch here still. They are not everyone's cup of tea, they moult, they have high prey drive, ultimate guarding instincts and are stubborn. They can be noisy. They will, and in fact like, to live outside, but will happily live inside if it's not too hot. They are at their calmest (and nicest) between 5 or 6 and death at about 12 :) They are amazing dogs though, not interbred and retaining a proper primitive aura and demeanour. They are usually extremely healthy. He is from Scandinavian show winning stock.

If you honestly feel you have the right environment for him, the experience and the time and patience, let me know. Homes will be vetted. I can do without the added responsibility of keeping him, but will if necessary. Please don't post this elsewhere, I could sell him to the wrong sort of owner today. he deserves much better.

I lent my camera to someone again, and despite 3 promises it's still not come home. When it does, or I can borrow one, I'll post a photo. He will not grow taller, but they fill out considerably until about 3 years of age. He consumes a LOT of food, and has high exercise needs.

The YouTube video is mildly gruesome, I had not watched anything other than the beginning. A few dead wolves apparently. But, hey that's what they do, our old female has caught three foxes on foot, now she knows her limitations and doesn't bother chasing them down if she comes across a scent or sees one.

He sounds like trouble.

I'd say shoot him, but that would probably only piss him off.:)

Gotta respect a dog that wears 3" spikes around its neck as part of its daily grind.

Good luck with the search for a home. For the right person, he sounds like a very rewarding dog to bond with. A real meeting of minds and mutual respect is needed.

4 raw chicken carcasses and a big tin of dog meat, plus a scoop of dog biscuits a day....

It calms down after 2 or so years though. He is a bit lean at the moment so needs feeding up for a while!

He is getting a tiny bit calmer by the day, but he's far from an average house dog :(

I think he has great promise, he's a nice guy deep down.

Well, no suitable takers so he's now registered in my name, micro chipped, inoculated and here to stay. He has been castrated and it's calmed him down a bit. I am trying to exercise him a lot and get his lead manners up to scratch! His sits and downs are pretty good now. So after thinning the dog numbers here down a bit they gave crept back up to nine.

Here are some photos of his sister with the lady in the black and white striped top winning at the Welsh Open Dog Show yesterday, with a few other Anatolians there too.

Great to hear you have taken him in, Chris. :)

Castration made a big difference to my GSD. He's a lot more calm and generally happier.

Yes it now worky.

Does the dog still want to eat your wife?

I can imagine that being an issue if so!!

I'm not sure he's that choosey who he wants to eat...although he did seem to just want to play when I met him.

Not sure if we'd agree on the definition of 'play' just yet....
