Dnk
Just needs to be Ethylene Glycol based The colour means nothing as to what the coolant actually is
chrex
Right, cheers Most coolants these days are...so didnt think it was a problem. Total capacity is 9litres yea?
Scooter
Whilst I agree you don't have to use the Toyota stuff it's £28 on ebay for 5l's of concentrate, so with some de-ionised water it'll do a full change easily.
chrex
Ah right okay, will weigh that up then. Rang toyota and got given a ridiculous price for it...
Tricky-Ricky
Have a read here, http://blog.chiltondiy.com/2013/06/which-antifreeze-is-right-for-your-vehicle/ There are three main types of coolant, one doesn't mix, not sure on the Toyota stuff, I just drained it out and flushed the system anyway, as I am inclined to remove any sediment and refilled with std blue type which can be had for £10 for 5lt and can be diluted down to 75/25% but I tend to use 50/50% so considerably cheaper than the red for life with is just a long life version and eventually goes brown and leaves deposits. Scooter
As above it's worth a good flush through, you can get a sense of the condition of the cooling system visually from, any sediment in the coolant expansion tank and the state of the rad under the rad cap. The less sediment and rustiness the better. If any is present, then after draining and with the lower rad pipe removed flush the rad from the top and collect the water in a bucket and see how rusty this is, sometimes the inner bore of the main coolant pipes has some rust residue too. The more signs you find the more I'd make an effort to flush/clean other bit's before refilling with coolant.

chrex
All good feedback. The system is defo gona need a flush as the car had been stood and the fluid is all brown inside. So i will need a flushing additive too.
trebor69
Why are you so against the Toyota red?

Dr_Doom
Buy; http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/antifreeze/halfords-oat-antifreeze-concentrate-5-litres and http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equipment/car-battery-chargers/halfords-battery-top-up-water-5l Job done. Even cheaper if you've got a trade card or know someone who has. This was recommended by some members on here. I've been using it for a few years and have had no problems. Pete
The red stuff has something in it to prevent reaction with aluminium I think. That's the important bit. Toyota will always recommend their own stuff like most car manufacturers.
Tricky-Ricky
Why are you so against the Toyota red? I think the only thing against Toyota red is the price The red stuff has something in it to prevent reaction with aluminium I think. That's the important bit. Toyota will always recommend their own stuff like most car manufacturers. They all have anti corrosive additive's, and pretty much all manufactures will claim their stuff is best. trebor69
I pay £26 delivered for a 5litre Toyota red concentrate from burrows motor Co ( on eBay) They also send me a "Toyota" shopping trolley token
Tricky-Ricky
I pay less than £10 for 5lt concentrate blue from any motor factor...does exactly the same.
Chris Wilson
All you get for the extra money is a red dye in a normal ethylene glycol anti freeze that changes to muddy brown if the coolant becomes acidic and needs changing. I buy and use any branded, none ready mixed ethylene glycol antifreeze that is at a good price at the time. ready mixed always costs more than mixing your own. If people wast 4 Life I keep it, but I think it's a waste of money
