Chris Bailey
Always had a soft spot for these little pocket rockets, 200-250bhp from a 1.3 turbo circa 900kg appeals to me. I will have 1 years NCB in July and depending on the renewal quote for my fiesta I may sell the fiesta and take out a small loan to buy a starlet. Can pick clean ones up for around £3500-4k. Running costs seem reasonable and up to 40mpg on a sensible run. My question is though who has owned one? I've seen nothing but positive comments from starlet owners themselves, but I'm sure I've seen a few people from here have owned them. Is there anything in particular to look out for? Any help, guidance or feedback much appreciated as always
Al Massey
I own a normal starlet, and all I can say about the body, engine and handling is it's great. Can't fault the little cars.

Good to hear, worst case scenario if the insurance is abit steep, I'll look into the Starlet SR. Already done a quote on them and its cheaper than the fiesta. Supra N_A
me, had 6 LOL one been a GT turbo ep82 then the rest been glanza V you can easy tune them to 200bhp at 1bar of boost using either the stock ct9 turbo or tdo4 on standard internals also I forged my old glanza with the tdo4 running 1.4 boost and made just shy of 300hp tbh, enjoyed it more when was stock engine with 200bhp felt enough power for the car which weighed less than 1000kg prices on them are crazy now thow and they all seem to be sheds, but can mabys find a clean one for 4k also part are just as pricey as the supra so you will spend a fortune as stock brakes are very poor, suspension is a must as again poor stock etc my last one
Dave_Batch
I had a gt quad light, was a weapon, standard form though starlets are only 130bhp but a few tweaks and you'll see a pretty safe 200, few more pennies and a td04 turbo off a Scooby and you'll be around 240 but that'll be the very high end of them unless you start doing pistons and rods.. Id love another one though they are great fun!
GreaseMonkey
I too own a '99 UK EP91 SR and have owned it since it was 2 yrs old/ for 15yrs have done 80k. It and has been an absolute solid little gem of a car tbh, never a worry for MOT and I'll run it till it can't be run no more lol!. Can't recommend them enough as a cheap run around/ go kart. If not had a look at already maybe worth having alook on the uk Starlet/ Glanza Forum http://www.ukstarletowners.com/index.php?. Have built a 300bhp 1.3 4EFTE engine which is in my mates Glanza, and another mate has an EP82 which he did is around/ over the 300bhp mark. Can't help but laugh at how rediculously quick they go, for a small shopping car. Like any cars of this age there are a few rough ones out there and best to go for as standard as possible car. Hth. BoGlE
I had one. A black glanza v. Mods are easy and cheap, mine had 210hp and it was the best motor I've ever owned. Insurance on 1yncb for me was about 2.4k for the first year if I remember. Could be wrong. Great car anyway, basically a step up from an actual go kart. Wouldn't be disappointed if you bought one

I'd be looking at a TD04 setup, around 200-230bhp on standard internals. I hear the standard engine is good for around 250bhp.
masterfett
Not owned one. But had a few hot hatches, if you can afford it I would suggest a pulsar gtir.. my old one was fantastic would out perform the supra in anything but over 100 in a straight line

Supra2jze
My mates in Bolton have a few of these Starlets & they certainly do move, good little run around toys but the whole car shakes as they shift through the gears it almost feels like the car will self destruct but yeah very fun cars. Most starlets haven't been registered as Turbos & so insurance is usually cheap but it depends if you want to update it on the records.
