Been helping my Dad with some classics

Mentioned a while ago that my Dad has been buying some classics, so thought I'd post up a few pics for those of you who like this sort of thing :) As you'll see, this is why I haven't had any time to do Supra related stuff recently :D

Little bit of backstory, my Dad has been considering buying a classic for a while now, and I've talked him through loads, from Datsun 240Z's, Pagoda SL's, Jaguar XJS's, the odd classic Bentley, Aston and a few Ferraris. But at heart he has always been a Jaguar fan, and really wanted a late 90's XK8 convertible. Given the horror stories you hear with these cars, I was reluctant to recommend one, especially with all the added complication of the large, electric roof. Anyway, all went quiet for a while, followed by a complete impulse purchase from a local classic car specialist. He had bought a mint condition, 30,000 mile 1984 Mercedes R107 280SL, with full documented history, down to a journey log the previous owner kept. So I've been helping him sort out his garage, we sourced a Carcoon etc for keeping it nice for the long term.

Thinking I had narrowly missed an XK8 shaped bullet, I breathed a sigh of relief. A week later, before collecting his new Mercedes, he went back to the dealership to sort out the paperwork, and they had just taken in a 40,000 mile, one owner 1998 XK8 convertible. He bought it straight away :D

Anyway, roll on a few weeks, and both cars are here. He absolutely loves the XK8, and hopefully it won't cause him too many headaches (I say him, I mean me :D ) However, he hasn't bonded with the Mercedes like he thought he would. It is a very lovely thing to drive, but it isn't sporty in the slightest. I've just had it out for the evening, and can confidently say it is one of the nicest cars I have ever driven, just because it is so smooth, and just oozes subtle class. However, unbeknown to me, he has been looking at another type recently, and we went and looked at one today which he has just put a deposit on. The last pic is a clue ;) I'm not sure whether he will end up keeping the SL now or not, he does technically have the garage space, but it is me who will end up with all the extra work. Although in compensation, I will be insured on all 3, so it's not all bad :D

is that the front grill of an E-TYPE :O

I was hoping it would take a little longer :D But yes, a 1969 Jaguar E Type Series 2. Was fully rebuilt during the 90's, so is in pretty nice condition. Genuine UK RHD car with 60k miles. I couldn't get any decent pics today as the storage area was small, but here's a link to the ad :)

Looking forward to working on something so special (and driving it of course :D )

I forgot to say, he also had some very special cars in. including a genuine 7 litre Shelby Cobra continuation car, and a genuine, fully restored Mustang Shelby GT500.

As I'm sure you can imagine, I had a good day poking around these legends. :)

Apparently it has over 600hp per ton. Tragically I suspect (and it was pretty much confirmed by the dealer) that both cars will end up as investments in private collections, and may not see the light of day. If I had the money, I'd daily that Mustang :D

  • 4 weeks later...

The new addition to his little collection arrived today :cool:It wasn't the one I previously linked to, we found another one that had just had a full nut and bolt restoration for similar money.

He's going to use it for the rest of summer, then in late autumn we're going to start doing some sympathetic upgrades and modifications to make it a little easier to live with, and nicer to drive:

- Conversion from LHD to RHD

- Power steering

- stereo

- 6 branch tubular exhaust manifold

- custom resonator delete 'X pipe'

- high torque starter motor

- proper electronic ignition

- convert from US spec twin carbs to either UK spec tripe Weber carbs, of possibly fuel injection with ITB's  I wonder if Syvecs do an E-Type loom? :D

- 5 speed gearbox (huge improvement on stock 4 speed, better acceleration, top end and economy

Other possibles include Cams and poly bushes, though the current bushes are all brand new.
