Another fim thread: original vs. remake

Hey, I like film threads.

Nominate films Hollywood has remade that have turned out significantly better or worse than the original/earlier version.

For example:

Cape Fear (1962) with Robert Mitchum: a bit dull, creaky and flaccid. Easily bettered by 1991, with an electrifying Robert deNiro and Nick Nolte convincingly falling to pieces.

The Vanishing - interesting and genuinely creepy French-Dutch film (1980ish) with horrifying ending, remade into formula action film with Jeff Bridges which strips it of everything worth watching and gives it a comfortable happy ending.

Heat - versus LA Takedown

Heat was tonnes better, though the script was pretty much word for word the same. Pacino and DeNiro really made that film their own. It even survived Val Kilmer !!

How much of that was budget I'm not sure.

I really don't agree with remaking good films just for the sake of it though. I always liked the original Assault on Precinct 13 - not seen the remake yet

The big question is how many of new releases are remakes of films you just don't remember

Somebody mentioned Carpenter's 'The Thing' on the horror films thread, which I think was miles ahead of its time and holds up really well. The original version (1951) was on TV recently and I watched it again. I thought it was plodding, silly and distinctly un-terrifying. Remake in this case was a million times better.

Ah, OK the critics say that 'Abre los ojos' is better - what do you reckon?. I haven't seen it.

And when was the last time you listened to a critic ;)

Miss Cruz was in both so good enough for me, plus the cameron crowe soundtrack is fantastic.

Not a fan of Tom but he's actually very good in the film.

Laughing at the original Thing comments, come on, it was like a cyberman with a stick up it's arse, very funny indeed

One thing that really annoys me:

Bruce Willis - Last man standing.

I didn't even realise it was a remake until half way through the first scene.

I felt enormously ripped off, particularly coz it was crap!

it's a remake of A Fistful of Dollars as most people will already know. What I didn't appreciate is that A Fistful of Dollars itself is a Remake of the 1961 Japanese film Jojimbo.

So "Last man standing" is a remake of a remake and I paid top dollar to see a remake of a remake that I'd already seen !! Has no-one an original idea nowadays ?

Yeah I do, how about a film with a guy that is a cop and goes undercover to track down some thieves, we could even put a Supra in it and loads of other jap cars but to keep the yanks happy we'll stick a big muscle car in with some sentimentle bullshite story line.

Now thats original

Funnily enough, I watched Kurosawa's 'Johimbo' a few weeks ago, not realising it had been remade into 'A Fistful of Dollars'! After about 20 minutes, I thought 'there's something strangely familiar about this....'

I like both. The battle scenes look a bit dated in 'Johimbo', but I still enjoyed it.
