Repairing a car on a 'public' road?

I need to change the diff, a driveshaft and gearbox on my Blue Supra (no tax, MOT or insurance) and cannot do it on my driveways as it's on a slope. I'm thinking of putting on my silver Supra's number plate and doing the work at the top of my driveway, however this is technically a public road.

I say public, but it's a dead end and only used by 4 houses (1 to the left of us and 2 to the right). There's no traffic and there's plenty of access space for passing cars. The road just above this is only used by traffic to our village, so not that much coming past, but the police do use it as a short cut quite regularly.

Are there any laws about leaving a car on axle stands/wheels-off on a public road? It should only be a for a few days and the neighbours are fine with it (They're all old and we get on very well). I just don't want any hassle from the Police... Maybe I'm over-worrying...

Why mate? Worse than just having no tax/MOT/insurance? I was only thinking of it in case of an ANPR hit

I'd be more concerned about being done for fraud, but I do see your point regarding the anpr cameras.

Catch 22 really?

What's the likelyhood of a traffic car going past on the road above and their anpr going off? If it's a jobsworth they'll do you, upto you if you know the area/risk. I've seen two cars recently a road away from me and its a dead end road with clamps on and NO TAX slapped on the window. Guess if you have no wheels they cant clamp it :D

Your over worrying mate, worst case youll get a slap on the wrist. You have a off road car that needs to be fixed to go back on the road so there will be smpathy. If i were you i wouldnt leave it on stands over night due to insurance issues if anything was to go wrong. Extra work but play it safe. Im always tinkering with my car on a road, my neighbour is a police officer and lots of people around the area and nobod gives me any greif here.

I wouldn't swap the plates or even remove them. I'd just get the work done, assuming it's only for a few days. When it drags on for months, is when neighbours can sometimes get the hump about seeing a half-finished car on axle stands that never moves.

This.

One of the reasons I made an effort to have another go at the piecing together the shell I started work on last year was because one of the neighbours who looks out onto where it is parked asked when it was being scrapped! I figured at least if I could get it off the axle stands and on a set of wheels, wash the green moss off it would look more acceptable in their eyes.

Just remove the plates.

Technically it is illegal to do it. and its illegal if the car is taxed moted and insured to do major works on the car in the public road, but it isn't causing a us-essence so you wont get hassled.

What he said mate. just take the plates off. if it bothers you. if it has no plates the old bill probably wont bother with it. but if they drive past and their anpr camra goes off or it says the supra should be silver. thay will probably stop and check it out.
