Hitbox Junkie
Well my parents have been looking and have seen a couple range rovers they like, so what model is best for both the range rover (2002 model onwards) and the range rover sport model. What would be the best engine any know faults to look for? I know they do a V6TDI or a V8TDI personally id go for the V8TDI but that is just me being, bigger is better attitude. Any help appreciated. sidewaysdan
I've had two both vogues I should have learnt the first time round.. First one was a 05 td6 low mls compressor for the suspension went £500 +labour very common problem . Then the electrical gremlins set in, doors wouldn't lock then wouldn't unlock :-( was the wiring loom another 800+ then one of the air springs had a leak £750 per corner+ labour . The list goes on think it cost me nearly £5k to fix over the 3 years we had it. Then thought it must have been a one-off so got a o6 4.4 v8 petrol. Loads of power not actually that bad mpg 70k mls full RRSH from a dealer/stealer. Two months in the compressor for the suspension gave up so back it went. Then the dash lit up like a Xmas tree with all the warning lights due to a break in the wire in the door . So by this time I had enuf sold at a big loss over 4 months
far
heres mine, I bought it brand new and would never keep it beyond the 3 years warranty period, ive ALWAYS had X5 or Q7's and comparitively the build quality seems poorer, squeeks from the dashboard already and the user interface is not as good as say my wifes new model X5. on a plus side it looks the nuts and the interior is to die for, the power (4.4 v8 diesel) is sublime. I will go back shortly to get the squeeks and other bits sorted under warranty. I would suggest Q7 or better still X5 - much more reliable IMO
Paul
I've owned an X5 40d for 3 years now and it's been really good, 2010 model. A few very minor warranty issues but well built and with the twin turbos it goes really well. My first BMW, pleased I made this choice as I was looking at RR too but heard too much bad about them. tintinmt
Buy an early Supercharged. Comes with Jaguar 4.2 and 6 speed ZF transmission. Then you need a good independent specialist for servicing and repairs. Don't go anywhere near a main dealer.

I think the days of owning the 'top dog' 4x4 being a Range rover are numbered with the levante, bentayga, urus, dbx etc coming out theres a lot more competition in the market place. Arguably someone who spends circa 125k on an Overfinch might spend a bit more on a Bentley (even thought i think the Bentayga is a bit fugly!) Personally I just think she bought a duff car and I really like the x5s and this would be my car of choice if I sold the supra later to fund a 1st or 2nd house/property business. I did suggest the Q7s as an alternative but they don't seem keen. Heck knows why they look great. again thank you for the advice, somewhat disappointing about your Overfinch with those problems for such an expensive car. liam1
i've just got rid off my 2003 4.4 v8 vogue, I loved it but too many things went wrong, lots of electrical gremlins on a daily basis, engine management light on all the time local land rover garage couldn't find what was wrong, my brother in law advised me to get one because he loved his but then his started to go wrong big time he couldn't get rid of it fast enough, I px mine for a z4 and that's even worse had nothing but trouble with it two cracked alloys drivers window went £300 to fix, faulty roof £500 to replace torque converter went £1800 to fix at bmw, currently back with dealer fighting for a refund off them at the moment. C12MMO
VW Toureg my Dads just got one and loves it. He had a supercharged Range Rover sport quite a few years ago and loved it but it was an absolute money pit.

That opens up a lot of options imo
cered
For £10k just get an XC90, as far as I can tell they're probably the best 4x4 SUV you can get for the money
heckler
I cant comment on a RR, but RR Sport is a Discovery with a same running gear, with a different shell. The TDV6 is bullet proof is serviced as per manufacture. It will suffer (based on millage) torque converter judder, which can damage the gearbox and transfer box, rear prop shaft bearing, suspension compressor, front lower wish bones, rear upper wishbones, general electrical issues due to the CAN bus network and heavy use of brakes pads/disks (as an example ive had my Disco 4 years and covered 43k, and i'm on 3rd set of fronts and 4th set of rears) Dispite its issues, i would not get rid of it, if I did it would be with another disco/RR Sport
Hitbox Junkie
mate for 10k I would say they are likely to be buying a money pit! do they HAVE to have a 4x4/SUV can they get an estate? That opens up a lot of options imo There looking for something comfy. And high up, I don't understand why my mother will never drive a estate. There's a fair amount you can get for 10k but obviously just looking for ideas so they can get the best for there budget. Think may have to tell them to look else where as they seem to have electrical problems. They saw a RR for 7k and seems a lot of car for the money but if there's all of the's gremlins something they can look for.

Within 2 years we had around 12 callouts with Land Rover roadside assistance. Numerous issues, mostly electrical related. Then she bought an old disco, just as big a mistake! I stay well clear of anything Land Rover/Jaguar! And Im not the only one:- http://landroverhell.com/article/8199/i-will-never-buy-a-land-rover-sport-again
supra900bhp
I have heard nothing but griff about them both manly the crappy wiring as breaks in most crappy places and needs new looms or rewiring and if anything like the old P38 rangerover then just hand the garage over your wallet as it will spend more time open then anything lol Oh and think if turbo go's then it's body shell off job so I been told!! But not sure on it though
heckler
Body off for turbo.. only if you take it to LR. Turbos can be changed with body on. Despite issues the D3/RRS has.. I would have another anytime. Like any vehicle you only ever hear about the bad things.

spikedjack
That's good going, parents had a 450h for 4 years and only recently traded it in. Lovely car for munching the miles in. Not a single issue in 4 years either
