Steering wheel vibration new wheels

Cheap wheels sometimes have these problems. Friend of mine bought some JR wheels for his Soarer, spent months and money trying to sort out a vibration at speed, ended up returning them to Japan Racing and it was a manufacturing issue.

Buy Rays/Advan/SSR/CCW next time ;)

PS I wouldn't be posting speeds like that on a public forum lol

I think i may have the same issue.

Wheels with incorrect offset are far more prone to causing steering shake than the correct offset ones (gyroscopic precession). Even a tiny imbalance can set them off `a' shakin' If the wheels and tyres are undamaged and running true, with zero defects you may have to add more caster angle to sort it. This is especially true if the top and bottom front wishbone bushes have gone soft. Beauty has its cost ;)

I don't feel as they are like crazy ofsets like some would have, these are 9J wheels with et25 ofsets so i wouldnt think its that much more. would the weight of the wheels have a impact on it as the after market wheels are much heavier. Need to look into the caster angle and see the condition of the wishbones.

Okay So i replaced the front wheels back to the original wheels and the shaking has gone completely, i had a look at the weights and its carrying 2x10g and 3x5g weights to one wheel and the other is 2x10g, and 1x5g, which i find strange as both the wheels are brand new and the tyres. Now im thinking it has something to do with the weight of the wheels.

400bhp, with ditch finders........mate?

I had to do it on a budget as I am finishing uni now and only start working in September. So while the student finance is rolling in, I got budgets looking to get a better set once I start working

25 grammes isn't bad at all, i would look to buckling, out of round, iffy tyres or wrong offset. But just how MUCH heavier are these new rims?

Are the tyres brand new? I had a problem on my merc chasing a wobble, adjustments to balance, alignment, checking for buckles etc and it ended up being the tyres being slightly mis-shapen. Unfortunately you'll never know this until you change them. Otherwise look at bottom wishbones. Good luck.

I had exactly the same issue with the wobble on a new tires on my bmw E60. I took it twice for balancing and wasn't helping untill the garage changed the tires for the new ones. Then the shaking stopped. They said that one tire had a factory defect and that caused the shakings.

A little surprised a dodgy tyre wouldn't show up when its being balanced

I had some brand new Goodyear Wranglers to go on a 4x4 and the amount of weight they needed to balance them

was ridiculous, something like 300 grams, we checked the wheels and they were fine so I sent them back and fitted

Pirelli Scorpians

Update: Okay so I had a bit of time today to swap wheels around AGAIN. And the results are as follows:

Test one:

Nearside front : new wheel

Offside front: oem wheel

Result : steering shaking at 40mph

Test 2:

Near side front : oem wheel

Offside front : new wheel

Result: shaking starting at 85mph

Test 3:

Front oem wheels

Result: minimal shaking from 85/90mph if I had to scale it I would say 2/10, 10 being excessive.

Is it possible that the new wheels exaggerate an existing problem like say a ball joint on its way out? Just thinking of difference in sides? Also arent you comparing 17" wheels with 18" wheels on the same axle? - is that wise/safe?

A friend of mine told me test it like that to see which one of the wheels are dodjy. I didn't really understand it myself.

I could test the front wheels on another car to see if the steering shakes.

I'm really not sure. [emoji15]

What offset are the new wheels? Can you (safely) swap the new rims and tyres front to rear?

The offsets on the new wheels are et25, don't think I can put the back on the front as they are staggered and the back are 10.5j

Mechanical engineering degree and you are asking here about wheel balance and steering shake....?

Worrying! ;)

Haha, I guess my problem solving skills are not on point or maybe it's just the final year stress. What ever the case I have been accepted on the McLaren graduate scheme starting in September. So I will have plenty of time to problem solve this issue. The weather has been bad and time has been taken revising. So once I have the time I'm sure I will get to bottom of it.
