Steering wheel vibration new wheels

Hi, I have fitted Japan racing jr12 to my BPU. The wheels are brand new with brand new tyres. I had them balanced and I have used the correct spigot rings.

Once I hit 60mph my steering starts to shake. So I had them balanced again just before japfest. On the way to japfest I tested them again and the steering wheel started shaking again.

I thought it could be balancing issue so I got up to 120mph thinking that the off balance will be corrected at that speed but it just got a lot worse.

I put my original wheels on the front and the car drives fine. So now I am really confused.

Any suggestions on what it could be?

If you are confident that the wheels have been balanced properly then how confident are you in your front alignment?

Not too confident on the alignment, I've never had an issue with the alignment the steering is dead straight when moving. Haven't had it checked with the lasers. With the original wheels I have no problems and can easily hit 140mph with no play or wobbles.

The wheels are heavier then the original would that have a strain impact on the suspension.

Are you sure they are sitting correct on the hubs

/QUOTE]

Yes they are sitting on the hubs. It is a possibility that there might be a small amount of dirt or something on the hubs. I will use a wire brush a clean it up and try it again. I've had the wheels on and off so many times it's getting Tiring to keep taking them off.

If the car drives fine on the standard wheels i'd put it down to the new wheels, if it was alignment it would vibrate on the standard wheels also.

Do you have spacers? I'd go with a poor balancing or damaged/buckled wheel.

Get your alignment checked.

Are the new wheels wider then the original set?

Yes the wheels are wider I had 17" original wheels on the front before can't remember the width of them but these new ones are 9j front.

I will get the alignment checked. Need to raise my hsd coilovers first.

I am starting to think there is a problem with the front wheels now. Which the originals there is no shake at all. It is just very strange as I know I haven't hit a pot hole, curbed a wheel or even got a scratch on the new wheels so it's only lead me to think the new wheels are not running true.

I will have another go at putting the original wheels on the car and and do 10mph hour step up's to like 120mph and try and feel and any play or shake just to eliminate everything else for sure.

I had a brand new wheel that was buckled, it had been dropped whilst it was being delivered.

I'd go to a tyre shop and get them checked on a wheel balancing machine to see how true they run, get them spun up

and look at the inner and outer lips for any signs of run out or buckles etc, also check the tyres for any defects.

The guy fitting the tyres and balancing them will know straight away of the wheel is buckled.

The local garage I took it too never sad anything about have mind a buckled wheel and plus there is no visible sign of buckles or cracks. I might take it Ibrar at speed wells to see if he can maybe help me out

What wheel nuts are you using? When you say originals are they stock wheels with stock nuts?

I'm using the gt50 wheel nuts, purchased from driftworks

And these are the wheels I am talking about

Could you see that it was buckled or did you only notice once it was driven on ?

The tyres are brand new and can't visually see any defects on the tyres.

Take it to Ibrar. I had the same sort of thing a while back. Took the car to Ibrar and he he balanced the wheels properly, hardly needed any balancing. But it seems some previous tyre fitter had filled the wheel with weights!

Still perfect since Ibrar sorted it, he's the man

Wheels with incorrect offset are far more prone to causing steering shake than the correct offset ones (gyroscopic precession). Even a tiny imbalance can set them off `a' shakin' If the wheels and tyres are undamaged and running true, with zero defects you may have to add more caster angle to sort it. This is especially true if the top and bottom front wishbone bushes have gone soft. Beauty has its cost ;)
