Cylinder head work

Recommended Posts

I'm considering putting a single turbo on my 100,000 mile '93 RZ Auto.

I really need to get my valve stem seals sorted out first though. I can't ignore the ever increasing plumes of smoke on startup any more. I'm OK to take the head off myself but I really don't fancy doing the valve work. It's uncharted territory for me and looks like a fiddly job. So I'm thinking of sending the head away to have it done.

  1. Does this sound sensible or should I just take the car somewhere and leave it with them?
  2. Any recommendations for where to have the work done?
  3. Bearing in mind this car has done 100,000 miles, while the head is off would it be wise to have the valves replaced?
  4. Anything else?

Thanks

When I did a valve on mine, I had the head taken off and sent to a chap in Oxfordshire via Adam (Jagman). Whilst the head was off we replaced the valves, springs and retainers and obviously the HG. We also took the opportunity to check the pistons (due to the previous problems) and changed the head bolts to ARP uprated ones.

HTH

I had a long talk with John about this before he left. The conclusion was that if you could get the head off yourself the actual work to replace the seals was bugger all (£80 max). Its the labour for head removal and reinstall that pushes up up the cost to the £1k mark.

John also mentioned that if the head was coming off then its a good time to replace the head bolts with ARP ones, but said the valves and springs were only worth swapping if going for some high lift cams and a standalone ECU

Arnout does exchange heads ;)

Miggles' work for Dude's car is pretty proven ;)

And then there's CW...

If you're going single then I would recommend you spend some cash on the retainers, springs, shims and cams - I'd recommend going to a 264in and ex setup and perhaps the Crower spring and retainer kit....maybe the crower stage 1 or 2 cam kit too. The valves will not need replacing unless damaged.

from http://www.crower.com

84168 - KIT TOYOTA SUPRA SINGLE SPRING & TI RETAINERS - $411.29

61401-2 - TOYOTA SUPRA (2JZ) DOHC CAMSHAFT (PRICE PER PAIR) - $881.01

That's about ~£800...

However what with your recent events you may want to leave well alone...in which case the valve stem seals can be done without removing the head...so taking the whole car to someone and letting them get on with it in situ shouldn't be a problem.

TBH, its not that hard at all.One your use to it, I mean we lifted the head and changed valves all new lapped in and head back on in a hour or so.

Jake mate, get a spring compressor,1/4 on a 10mm socket, and a nice magnet with some copper grease and get stripping that head ... first time it will seem kinda fiddly but then you be swapping heads and valves like no bodeis business ... LOL

To put the new seals in i use a 10mm round the seal and a rubber mallet and gently tap them in until they go no more, hard to explain this but once you do it youll kinda feel it. :)

Have fun .... :limp:

TBH, Id change the valves as the ferrea ones are not that expensive and go for the stock size for good response .... but if your gonna change the valves might aswell do the springs and retainers tooo .... it gets kinda like a domino effect :)
