Guest GeorgeW
With the anticipation of my first Supra soon in my ownership, I have been making a shopping list, and got to 'BOV's'.. I have looked into them quite a bit and decided on the HKS SSQV. Now here is the question.. I understand not to go for the replica eBay ones, but what about 'universal' BOV's? not only on eBay but also places like the SupraStore: See Here Are these OK? Are they difficult to fit compared to Supra specific BOV? Why are they that much cheaper? Thanks George
np89
Tbh theres nothing wrong with the replica HKS valves, they work exactly the same and generally last the same amount of time, the issue is that the plunger is plastic and it deforms with heat and time and doesn't seal and then leaks. You would be better off going with a Greddy type valve (genuine or replica) as they use a metal plunger and it seals a lot better
Nic
The Supra specific SSQV kit includes the mounting bracket and the rest on the hardware to fit it in place of the stock BOV. Supra specific HKS SSQV kit If you bought a universal SSQV you would need to either source the bracket separately or buy a weld on boss and get this welded onto an aluminium intercooler hard pipe, you'd need to fit an aluminium IC pipe kit if you don't already have one fitted. HKS SSQV mounted on weld on boss Edited April 13, 2016 by Nic (see edit history)
Swampy442
The best advice is don't bother with one.
Guest GeorgeW
Well the idea is to do the BPU up to the 400 mark - would a cheapo BOV be ok for this, as its not immense power?
np89
Cheap ssqv or the like will be fine at BPU

j_jza80
I'm not running one at the moment, and it sounds amazing. However, I'm fitting a turbosmart recirculating one tomorrow. Very high quality peice of kit, and the firmness of the valve can be adjusted in situ.

Pudsey
You haven't mentioned what Supra you are taking ownership of. If it's a vvti it will have a Mass Air Flow sensor in the intake pipe, and fitting a blow off valve will cause fueling issues. If you have the earlier non vvti engine, then you won't have a problem

Guest GeorgeW
I like the sound, but maybe it's something I would get tired off? I love the sound of them in video clips. I will get the car here, play in it for a few months then decide if it's needed, that may be a sensible way to do it. Is a JDM 2004 supra RZ twin turbo. gordy.r
I personally run the oem bov at BPU levels and all is fine and I quite like the sound as the HKS 'squeek' irritates me (each to their own), but when the time does come to change I'll be going for the Tial sport bov as it is some bit of kit! Guest GeorgeW
Well maybe I will put the money into the BPU instead, I didn't realise the OEM valve makes a noticeable noise, it doesn't come out on videos? Also, regarding the BPU, you go with decats, but I'm guessing these don't pass MOT, so what's the crack? Do you just swap them back before MOT? Style
Depends what year your car was manufactured, if it's pre 1996 then you should be fine without any cats. Or you find a friendly MOT man
gordy.r
My oem bov makes a fair noise, also got a '94 with no cats and MOT's are passed each year.
JordanC
Mine doesnt seem to make much noise outside of the car but I hear the OEM one plain as day inside, quite like it!
ADD
SSQV's are awesome BUT turbo flutter from a single is the ultimate
