Guest Tommellon2
Hi guys, if had my supra twin turbo auto for year now and have decided I want a manual, looking for options ad experiences on a manual conversion in the UK. Options I see are: 1 : all oem with V161 which I see as obviously best option but really can't bring my self to pay 3k+ for an untested gearbox 2 : used BMW box, not the best box to use but plentiful supply, cheap to buy and from experience they can take the power, kits are avail fromhttp://www.abc-clutch.com/products/1-2JZ-BMW-gearbox-adapter-KIT for around 1.5k. Trouble I find is there's not a lot of information on this swap and not sure if there would be much of a cost saving offer a V161 swap after paying for a clutch 3: haven't done much research in to this but possibly a 350z box or 5 speed supra box That for you're help any experiences or opinions are very weLome
Swampy442
So what you're saying in essence is, you want a cheap manual swap?
berg
Have a look on GyroDrift, they sell a bmw conversion kit for a third of the price of the abc kit Depending on power theres no reason to fork out huge amounts on a clutch either
j_jza80
JamieP is using a Gyrodrift adapter on his E46 build, probably worth keeping an eye on that as I'm sure SRD will iron out any of the drivability issues associated with gearbox adapters. Guest Tommellon2
Cheers for the reply guys, and yes to be honest looking for a cheap swap as I say can't stomach the prices for a used untested v161. Will look in to the gyrodrift, not looking for huge power probably no more than a bpu just can't deal with the auto any more ha
mellonman
us mellons have got to stick together , so if you do go ahead with the conversion I could be intrested in the autobox as a spare for mine
ashloys
R154 will take more than enough power for what you'll need most likely and work out reasonably cheap if you take your time sourcing parts. Mine will be complete in the next few days so give me a shout if you have any questions! BMW box would be a good shout although the gear ratios aren't great from what I've heard on a road car? ellis
Sell car, add money that you were going to spend on the conversion, buy a manual. Got to easier, cheaper, quicker and less potential mechanical/electrical pitfalls than messing around with a conversion.
fahim21
I was looking at this route for when I get an auto. Supposedly the 420G getrag from the e46 M3 is very similar to the V160. e46. Supposedly they take 700+ tq without breaking a sweat (don't quote me!), GyroDrift do that conversion too, ofc a bit more than getting a e39 530D box (they take like 1100NM tq stock I think?) but ratios, as mentioned by Ashloys, isn't all that great for road.
