xm 80
Hey guys, i'm in the need of changing my rear upper control arms out i read a tone on supraforums.com and the manual itself on how to do this, but it seems like some people do it different than mentioned in the manual? i'm not trying to waste a whole day on try and error, so do you guys have any advice on how to do this the easiest way (really don't want to get the driveshafts out unless i really have to)? it's not clear to me either if you have to get the rear coilover out of the way too (it's not mentioned in the toyota workshop manual). and last but not least do you use a puller or a brass drift (this was mentioned in the manual) to get the driveshaft out of the hub. thanks in advance guys for any help
Chris Wilson
You need to remove the wheel, and using 3 (or maybe four, I can't recall all the bolt / nut hex sizes, including the ABS wire clamp one), spanners, a ball pein hammer, and a pair of pliers for the outer ball joint split pin, you can remove and refit a top rear control arm. It's much easier on a ramp, and some ingenuity is needed to refit the funny nut that self locks on one inner spherical bearing pivot.I hot glue it to the spanner. Neither the damper nor the driveshaft needs removing.
xm 80
but how else do you tighten up the ball joint on the control arm? there is basicly no space between the axle and the ball joint and the axle?!?!

xm 80
i mean u can probably easily use a spanner to tighten it up, but i'm not sure if i can use my torque wrench and a nut to tighten it up...or?!?
Chris Wilson
Just tighten it up by hand using a normal length ring spanner.
xm 80
thanks Chris for the help !!!! just looked up the torque for this nut and it's around 110Nm or so......which should be managable by hand.
Chris Wilson
Good God, easy, that's only an 81 pound pull on a 12 inch long spanner.

xm 80
soooo i had 6 hours today to kill and started undoing the left hand side.....all i got was this: i managed to open the nut on the ball joint and the self locking one....that's it!! the other nut/bolt wont open, because i can't get any decent angle on the bolt to open it..... the other thing is that the ball joint is still stuck and tells me right in the face to go fuck myself...any ideas what else might help? so far i tried: using a ball joint seperating tool (looks like a fork), heat up the area around the ball joint, try to give some decent smashing with a hammer to loosen it up a bit....but nothing! help would be really appreciated
Chris Wilson
For a countryman of one of the finest fighting forces the world has ever experienced, a country that built some of the best aircraft, tanks and rockets known to mankind at the time, and some of the best vehicles made to this day, this is a shameful admission. It would be easy to blame Merkel, but for now, eat your spinach and buy a bigger hammer in the morning
bignum
Put the nut back on about 5 turns, get a crow bar levering against the hub as if trying to push the balljoint up then hit the actual hub carrier with a mid sized hammer, the joint should pop.
