6Sp wine in 2nd

The car says it's done 13,400 miles and I have absolutely no reason to doubt it. The interiors mint, the seats haven't been sat on, at all really (!), and there is not a blemish anywhere on the exterior. Add to that an extremely clean engine bay and a jap service history with two entries + independent verification of milage by BIMTA (British Independent Motor Trade Assoc) then you'd be pretty confident that the numbers staring back at you from the dash are telling the truth.

So I have to ask, does the standard 6 Speed box tend to wine? You can hardly hear it most of the time, but give it some power in 2nd and it does get quite audiable! It kinda sounds like a straight cut box really (which I know it isn't). Any ideas?

Hopefully this will allay your fears...

"This box has a reputation for being slightly agricultural when selecting gears and on occasions can be quite noisy in operation. Generally there is nothing wrong with the box; it is in fact a very strong box as far as manual gearboxes go."

IMO 'whining' isn't usually a problem. Agricultural, clunky, noisy shifting yes, but not whining.

I honestly don't think it will be a problem anyway, but it's not 'normal'.

Not sure if that makes you feel better or not.....:conf:

Cheers,

Yeah, last car a Fiesta RS Turbo and the one before that, a XRpoo. I guess I should start applying different standards now eh?

Yeah nathan, not sure either. I guess we'll find out sooner or later tho.

I had a short-shit (deliberate typo!) kit fitted to mine, which then snapped off whilst sideways at 70 around Goodwood!

I've not actually got the original bits back on yet, its still a "quick-fix" welding job which cost me a fiver so I could get a few more laps in that day!

Anyway, my point is that because I haven't got the original bits back on yet I don't think the gaiter(s) are right, so I can really hear everything from the gearbox/shift - and it whines and generally makes quite a racket, especially in low gears. Perhaps you can just hear a bit more than normal from your gearbox?

...then again perhaps I'm just spouting bollocks...! :looney:

So you wouldnt recomend a short shift klit then, was thinking about getting one......

Hehe - good idea :)

Apparently B & M have released a new version of the kit since mine, but the one I had was poorly made - you could see from where it broke that it wasn't welded properly in the first place.

I never got used to the feel of the shift, it felt awkward and clunky, plus it was difficult to engage certain gears at times.

Although it was easy to fit, the way you adjust it meant that you could never get all the gears right, some were always difficult to engage.

The standard shift isn't exactly "long" either, so even if the kit did work it wasn't a massive difference, just stiffer if anything!

Hey, but don't let me put you off buying one if you want to.... :innocent:
