v6shep
Good moaning all. Been having some trouble for some time now. Car wouldn't start, when it did it was idling fine, but as soon as touching the pedal, it coughed, spluttered and farted until it cut out. I found the ignition coil was weak and sparked as and when it wanted, no engine light came on at all. So, replaced it this week, still not solved the problem. But, two codes finally came up. These are 12 and 24, I've looked them up (not that they make much sense to someone with no mechanical experience at all, unless mechano as a kid counts), Just wondering if what these codes are pointing to would be the cause and need replacing? Cheers guys

v6shep
Thanks dave, I found these fault codes, bit as I say, doesn't mean a lot to me :-/ Also wondered why it says ecu in all of them, that isn't saying I have an ecu problem too is it? David P
Air temp sensor, make sure that it's plugged in? Same for crank sensor or swap in another.
v6shep
So not camshaft sensor? Also, in the 3 or 4 years of ownership of the car, it has had q cone fitted in place of the stock box by previous owner. The air temperature sensor has never been plugged in, it's just sitting there in the bay. And never caused an issue, but saying that, I think it would be wise to go back to a stock one Edited April 1, 2016 by v6shep (see edit history)
David P
As long as it is plugged in and in the induction airflow, next to filter for example, it'll work fine. No fault code for cam sensor.
v6shep
So, not gone and bought the crankshaft sensor yet. Car is starting and idling fine now. This is how it runs:
David P
I'm not psychic enough to diagnose from that, have faith in the fault codes, when they are gone it will be mended.
v6shep
Ok, so I'm told the part number I need for the sensor is 90919-05023 then also told 90919-05006 then 90019-05007, It's an import NA, anyone know which I actually need? Many thanks
David P
N/A has crank sensor in distributor, swap in another used distributor.
v6shep
Wow, I didn't know that. I thought it was under the water pump
v6shep
N/A has crank sensor in distributor, swap in another used distributor. You mean whole distributor dave?
Scooter
Yes I think he does, if you carefully mark the position of yours it's a straight forward swap and you should be able to get a used one cheaply to try.
David P
Yes, it's the easiest way to do it. I had a routle through my Supra stash today for some components for A N Other and by chance found the distributor that came off mine, it's a known good one if you need? v6shep
Ah bloody ell lol, cheers dave, got one last night. Fingers crossed it's a good one. If this doesn't solve it, it'll be another few weeks and then I'll try get a sensor. And cheers scooter
v6shep
So, received my distributor, changed that, ignition coil, changed that. Car started, drove fine for a mile, turned around, pulled up at home, problem started again, struggling to start, struggling to reach 2k Revs. engine light wile driving was intermittent. So I'm guessing it's still going to be the crankshaft sensor. Can someone let me know the correct part number for this please as I've had at least 3 different ones. I also read GM use the same one using a different part number. Many thanks

They'll be able to tell you the part number.
v6shep
Cheers Steve. Just checked for a fault code and 12 is still there
Scooter
So I'm guessing it's still going to be the crankshaft sensor. As David posted it's integral to the distributor and not a separate small cable and plug one like the TT, I'll try and look up code 12 in the workshop manual later... Thanks pal, I just went out again to start the car, it's just turning but not starting again now. I did read there was no crankshaft sensor under the block so that also confused me. These are what I've found on the ge, but this says there is a crankshaft sensor

v6shep
Pay close inspection to the distributor loom clip and wires. When fitted, I marked up where the rotor arm was before swapping if that's what you mean David?
