Do other motorists stereotype supra owners?

So travelling to Norwich today, pulled in at a service station for a break.

Next thing two young lads pull up next to me. "ah man love your car, never seen one in real life" they were interested the usual questions followed, is it the 2J , is it turbo , is it manual.

I guess we as advocates of our beloved Supras are the ones that will mold the impression that people have of the car.

I've only had a small amount of negativity about my Supra in the 6 1/2 years of ownership, firstly from a green minded lady who bitched about its CO2 emissions. I asked her how many new Renault Clios she had bought new in the 22 years since my Supra was built, 6 was her answer. I enjoyed the slow realisation on her face about who had caused the larger CO2 cloud! ;)

The only other slight piece of negativity is regarding the autobox, but then I've only had that from spotty oiks with Corsas and Astras.

You'll notice at cars shows/meets that alot of people will walk through a line of supra's and look in the interior, if its auto they will walk away until they find a manual. Shame really as they probably have no idea how good the auto actually is.

Always enjoy it when you have a friend in the car who is not a fan of autos until you kickdown and they grab the seat. Always makes me laugh

I always get positive comments in mine, especially at the local meets and petrol stations. Most people ask the usual questions like is it a turbo, power, whats fuel like which I dont mind talking about. The one that does get me mad is 'why did you buy an auto?' then I have to explain its tiptronic and how much more more a manual is in price.

Getting let out of junctions, and waves/thumbs up from other drivers is good too, never got that in my old asbo orange ST :D

in the town that i live in my supra has a strange effect on the local young boyracer crowd , everytime they pull up behind me their engine starts reving , or if they are to to the side as soon as they see the supra their engine starts reving , ive got used to it now but it was a bit annoying when i first got the car - im not sure what they are trying to achieve , im 35 and not really gonna race them lol

I've had one of the dominos delivery drivers literally ask me 20 questions about it when he turned up, said it was his dream car etc etc, nice bloke just a bit strange when you're expecting a "hello" and "here's your pizza".

Round my neck of the woods the boy racers are horrendous, I have yet to find someone local who would even give me a run for my money yet but they all seem to want to have a go, it's not really negative just boring. Easy for an 18 year old to get a full tank of fuel in their corsa for £30 quid, I would literally spend £600 a month on fuel if I raced or booted it every time I was given the come-on.

I had a golf 1.4 before the supra and can honestly say I was never tempted to try and race something I would get destroyed by, don't understand the logic but maybe they just want to see it go. I get a fair few turns of the head, either from the "wtf is that" or "omg check that out!!"

I did have some drunk bird in Swansea literally scream "OH MY GOD A SUPRAAAAA!" from a bus stop as I passed a few months back, it's a mixed bag.

After reading this thread and other similar threads, I will also like to chip in.

I have now been the happy owner of a Supra for 3 years and one thing I have learned, is not how you respond to those so called haters, I believe it is more about how you as a Supra owner accept that you have something that is a bit unusual and special, and haters is just a part of that.

I come from a society where being different is equal to being a prick (literally). Therefore, by time, I have learned to be more humble about my successes incl. my car.

I don't mind talking about my car but I never mention it unless somebody directly ask me.

The car is my hobby and passion and it should not be a matter of what other thinks. I don't know how it is in UK but in Denmark, it is unfortunately all about how other see you. What kind of clothes you are wearing, what is the brand of your sunglasses and at which restaurant do you normally eat. Everything has become so god damn superficial nowadays. And if you don't follow the flow, you will be stamped.

And I am sorry to say this, but I got the impression that the majority of the members on this page are more busy looking after people to see if they look after you while driving the Supra. And when you receive some negative feedback from the average citizen, then you feel the necessity to create a thread in here to boost your self-esteem again.

I admire people who have success but don't feel the necessity to mention it. The same goes with cars. Accept that you have something different and accept that some envy you. Deal with it instead of feeling the necessity to rack those people down.

I am also that typical hater when I see a guy with a super-car who thinks he's better than other because he drives an unusual car.

These kinds of discussions are always funny and I don't expect any of you to agree with me.

Please don't kill me!

Now here is someone that speaks some sense. Don't worry that superficiality is in the UK as well. You only need to go to london to see the amount of "bad boys" in their cars trying to make a scene

After owning mine for 13 years I've had a whole range of reactions, from people shouting 'nice Supra' in traffic to a guy in a beaten up Mondeo calling me a supercar wanker after giving way to him around parked cars where I had right of way. I just appreciate the positives and ignore or laugh at the negatives. After all I bought the car for me not everyone else.

My Supra is now part of the family and i get enjoyment out of the engineering of it and it is a unique aesthetic, for the most part with most people this draws admiration, yes there will always be people who scorn on this kind of car, i am not arsed at all, as it cannot be personal, not like a bloke in the pub who tells you he used to go out with your wife stuff.

So most of us see this in a very similar way:innocent:, the thread has drawn a lot of interest, and it even reached as far as Denmark.

Hi J-Jz80, I learned a long time back not to talk about "the doctor" on the open forum as it drew too many members having a go, some members PM me for information about my NA/T and who did it, and in the main, for the money spent, the job was commendable. Also at the time i was nieve about the rules of the club for traders.

He does not come on the club fprum any more and his facebook entries have stoped, so not sure what the situation is ? Herbie.
