LOGIE
I think I know my answer here but looking for confirmation. (Alternator packed in) Went a spin a few hours ago and on the last 5 miles towards home. Red warning light came on at centre of dash and active front spoiler light started flashing. I tested voltage off battery whilst car is running with everything turned off. And not trusting my cheap ebay multimeter I got my jdsu out. LOGIE
Is 13.8v too low for a running car?
LOGIE
Also just before this issue my speedo packed in?? Could this be related or more likely speed sensor and coincidence that two faults happened at once
Mike2JZ
When my alternator died, I had nearly all the warning lights come on and my voltage was sitting around 12v. I think 13.8 is ok? Edit: my thread for reference
bignum
13.8/14 is about right mate.
LOGIE
Good info thanks Mike. 13.8v I may in early stages of alternator failure. Anyone confirm or advise?
j_jza80
I've heard of similar symptoms occurring before crank pulley failure...
LOGIE
Hmmm maybe it's just the speed sensor causing all this...hence active spoiler getting confused. It usually automatically deploys at 60mph and retracts at 30mph bit if speed sensor on gearbox has packed in this would cause all above symptoms to happen. Nic
Have you checked for stored fault codes?
LOGIE
No mate. I don't have a code reader...nor the know how to use one. . It's prob pretty easy?
Nic
Very easy to do with a paperclip or piece of wire, see here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?35920-How-To-Check-the-diagnostics-codes

Benjy
Should be 14-14.4v ideally.
LOGIE
OK done paperclip test. No idea what the results mean Engine management light flashed in this sequence 1,2,2,5,3,4,4,2. Anyone able to help?
Nic
OK done paperclip test. No idea what the results mean Engine management light flashed in this sequence 1,2,2,5,3,4,4,2. Anyone able to help? Did you test with the ignition on but with the engine off? That sequence of flashes means you have 4 fault codes 12, 25, 34 & 42, if you go to the pics on the link I posted, it will tell you what each fault code is. LOGIE
Yeah ignition on and engine off. Thanks nic. Waw Is it possible that if I find 1 fault it could clear all the others? 4 faults from a car that is running great just the speedo isn't working. I changed the No1 speed sensor today and speedo still not working. Edited March 20, 2016 by LOGIE (see edit history)
Mike2JZ
Looking through those errors, they all share the possibility that the ECU could be the culprit. Maybe if you are lucky someone else with a TT near you can let you try their ECU just to rule it out as it takes 2 minutes to swap in and check. LOGIE
Yeah you may be right Mike. No one anywhere near me with a TT auto sadly.
