alxns7
Just out of curiosity, how much play do you have in your diff? Any 'clunk' when driving? I don't know the technical term but here is what I mean to illustrate I read it's pretty common on Supras. I have a little play, not as bad as in that video but it is noticeable when driving. It's a torsen 6-speed. Edited March 15, 2016 by alxns7 (see edit history)
David P
The nasty noise is coming from that loose UJ mounting at rear of prop. Take good look at first one second of clip.
Chris Wilson
Well spotted!
alxns7
Indeed! But appart from the propshaft joint play, is a diff supposed to have that sort of play?
Chris Wilson
Unless it's dry of oil it sounds buggered. Even if it's not dry of oil it sounds very poorly. Not sure what the diff is in, in that video. If it's American it could be normal. they can't seem to make diffs, ask any Chrysler mechanic. If your six speed clonks and it has the dual mass flywheel still, suspect that might be worn, and the cause. A little play in the diff is normal, and indeed, necessary. alxns7
Cool thanks When I say mine clonks, it's not a metallic sound. Just a solid 'thump'. Sometimes it shakes the whole shell a bit, which just sounds a bit unusual when coming from a Clio or Yaris - but obvious considering the complete different layout. Actually our newish Mercedes Sprinter vans at work also do the same kind of 'thump' Edited March 16, 2016 by alxns7 (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
You might also want to check the propshaft centre support bearing and the rear gearbox mount and the engine mounts.
alxns7
Yep cheers, at some point I will have to replace a few shaft seals around so I'll check everything
Jellybean
I had a similar clonking, the propshaft centre carrier bearing was gone It was 120 euro from Toyota a couple of months ago

Jellybean
I have same noise when go in deceleration more when hot part number ? deceleration is a good indicator that the pinion-bearing preload has loosened.
