Alex_GT
The last couple of days there have been stains on the drive where my car has been parked, and it appears the diff is leaking oil. I was going to post something about the diff before, but I didn't think anything of it. When the car is stationary and I pull away sometimes there is a horrible grinding/clunking noise from the rear of the car. It sounds like one of the wheels is locked and is dragging along the road. Now I know there is a leak could the two things be related?
Chris Wilson
Sounds like a seized brake caliper. Take the car for a drive and carefully feel each rear wheel in the hub nut region. Is one a lot hotter than the other? If so, seized caliper. This would make the differential work harder and could, just conceivably heat up the diff oil a lot. You need it on a ramp and see exactly where the diff oil is leaking from. Side (C/V joint stub shaft) seals, prop flange seal, or diff cover sealant. Alex_GT
Had the car on the ramps yesterday, the oil is leaking from where the input shaft goes into the differential. Is it easier to completely replace the diff or to try and repair it?
Scooter
If it's an open diff you can probably get a replacement for far cheaper than a repair.
Chris Wilson
You mean behind the propshaft flange? If you mark the nut and the pinion shaft so you can retorque the nut to exactly the same place it's trivial. Much easier on a ramp. Labour and price of new seal. Alex_GT
What are the part numbers I should be looking for?
Alex_GT
To update this as well, the leaking of the oil stopped a while ago, but the noise remained. I have taken it to Toyota today for the MOT and they had a look at the differential, and they seem to think that an LSD has been fitted, but it is faulty and that is what is causing the grinding noise. If the differential is faulty, what is the best solution? Should I buy the internals or a whole unit?
David P
Maybe it stopped leaking because there is no longer any oil in it to leak out? you can probably get a replacement for far cheaper than a repair.
