Hitbox Junkie
Just asking around as I was curious but has anyone tried gearlink.Co.uk he makes parts in house if he can't get parts so might be worth someone giving him a call instead of using jacks. A guy at college is having his box done there 1st and 2nd shortened ect for his race mini. (Not a v160 box) but just thought I'd share for a different avenue to use to get your Box done in the UK? If anyone has tried them.and been refused then just delete the thread.
JasonR24
This seems like a good idea. I'd much rather send my gearbox to a British company for several reasons.
jazz1
I would use Jacks transmission their service and build quality is amazing .
Hitbox Junkie
I would use Jacks transmission their service and build quality is amazing . I deffantly would use jacks. But just an alternative as some really want uk but maybe it would be cheaper to use a UK based company?

True might be cheaper, but I have heard so many stories on rebuilding V160, jacks seems to be the only company recommended to use. Keep track my gearbox build soon you will see their amazing quality rebuild.
Fitz
Just a random question, why do people say that the V160/V161 is 'difficult' to rebuild? Surely its not that much difference from other manual gearboxes? Clearly with this ignorant comment I don't know much about the differences on the internals and operations of gearboxes but to me a gearbox is a gearbox. Luxluc
I really wanted the Jacks Stage 3 ; therefore, anything else was not a option for me. I'm sure if it's only about replacing syncros or grears, a gearbox specialist can do it. The only thing to bear in mind is the obsolescence of the parts. Noz
I'm taking my R154 to garage D. Lots of gearbox history on drift boxes and supra boxes. You'll need to confirm the 6sp obviously. Worth a shout though.

Clearly with this ignorant comment I don't know much about the differences on the internals and operations of gearboxes but to me a gearbox is a gearbox. I thought this too. However, Keron mentioned to me that he had used a gearbox specialist for something like 7+ years and managed to rebuild all sorts. However, when Keron left him with the V160 he called back a few days later and advised he wasn't confident working on it. I'm sure it's something to do with getting the gears/synchros off safely without buggering the things up. Definitely a specialists job.

Tyson
Thread hijack, how much movement should there be in the stick when it's in gear ?
j_jza80
It has to be about time one of the traders looked into making a proper adapter kit to use a different manual gearbox with these cars. I know that has its own challenges, but we've reached the point now where people are asking £2500 for broken gearboxes, which is silly.
Scott
Thread hijack, how much movement should there be in the stick when it's in gear ? The closer to nil the better. I would simply describe it as minimal. Drive a new manual box... that's how much movement you should feel.
Fitz
Yeah its more to do with parts really, our gearbox specialist has done them for us in past when parts were available So what you're saying is, your gearbox specialist could tear down a V160, identify what parts are needed - then we (or they) could contact Jack Transmissions to buy the parts and have it fixed in the UK? Of course things are easier said than done

Of course things are easier said than done I doubt Jacks would sell any parts, maybe if they start producing bits but tbh I could get that done in the UK Would just cost a lot of money

Once my 420g gearbox is on, I will have change left over to buy 4 spares for the price of a shagged v160. It truly has gone bananas.

Chris Wilson
One of the problems is people want (for no real good reason i can see) a six speed gearbox. The next issue is people do "silly things ;)" with MKIV's, like drag racing and drifting. Who is brave enough to offer any sort of warranty on a gearbox used that sort of thing? The only way I can see a trader like myself offering a conversion is to let the car owner source the gearbox and just supply the parts needed to adapt it to the car. A quick glance at what's available that would realistically be in the ball park, torque capacity wise, for a potent single turbo 2JZ-GTE in a full weight MKIV is perhaps the Borg Warner / Tremec T-6060 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremec_TR-6060_transmission It has a choice of ratios, looks like it *MIGHT* go down the tunnel, has a removable bell housing, and seems to have different input shaft lengths available. How much cheaper, if any, then a new Getrag V160 / V161 they are I have no idea. I would have to measure up to see if the gear lever came out somewhere sensible, too. Some would say the T-56 would do. I don't believe it's up the job in a powerful single turbo car. The BMW diesel turbo boxes are undoubtedly strong, but the ratios are no good with the range of diff ratios available for the MKIV It's not that traders won't have looked at this, it's just people probably wouldn't pay enough for the end product So how much is a new Tremec T-6060 landed here? Big Supes
Out of interest, have you looked at how the ratios stack up on the BM boxes against the W58/V161? With a 3.280 FDR its not very far away from the v161 at all. They can also handle a lot of abuse.
Chris Wilson
I am now not sure if the bellhousing on the Tremec t-6060 is actually separate or contains some of the front bearing supports. If it's not a separate bellhousing it would be far from ideal. I looked at Hitbox Junkie's link and I think there must be various versions of this box as the one I was looking at on a web site the other day took a lot more torque. I have just seen this version, maybe there are others? I think the one I saw at first was from the supercharged Corvette http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/transmissions/mg9-tr6060.html
Chris Wilson
This is £3200 in the USA and looks more promising: http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/transmissions/t56-super-magnum.html#Parts Gear ratios on 5th and 6th too high though, 5th needs to be 1 to 1 and 6th a bit of an overdrive. Not sure if alternate ratios are available. Torque capacity is good though!
