Guest Chris_jellyman
So, long story short. I bought a mk4 golf r32 about 6 weeks ago. I drove it for maybe 12 days and noticed some problems, most right away but some took some looking for. I've always liked r32's and there was no supras available in my budget at the time so I thought I'd give one a go for a few months. Whyyyy?!!? The problems so far is a main oil leak, the heated seats weren't working, the power steering pump was wining, alternator workshop light came on, front fans were kicking in from a cold start when the weather has been struggling to get over freezing. I called the garage up and told them right away, they took a while but gave me a date to bring it back. It's now been with them for 4 weeks this coming Friday, which is ridiculous! They keep fobbing me off saying it's on the ramps it's on the ramps the engine is out blah blah blah and having been doing that for two weeks almost. I've called trading standards and I have 30 days window for them to fix the car, they have the right to attempt a repair within "a reasonable time scale", but surely this is too long? They won't refund me as yet and I don't know what to do! Any advice?
Spunkmeyer
Doesn't sound like enough time has passed to force any type of response yet. At least by them taking it back they acknowledge some responsibility. Check they aren't billing you labour though! - once it's returned take it for an independent garage to check the work (at your own cost) any whiff of dodgy drive it right up to the front door of the pedestrian entrance park it up drop the keys into someone's hands and say that's it I want my refund
Guest Chris_jellyman
Yeah when it's back I'll be getting it checked over, I'm hoping there is something not sorted with it really just so I can get rid of it. I don't know the usual time scale they can have the car to be honest but I'll give it a week before I kick off. As soon as its back and sorted it's going up for sale anyway now that there are a few cars I'm interested in on here, fingers crossed it's soon
Spunkmeyer
If you can arrange it sit around the outside with a group of friends and just be annoying asking politley for your car to be fixed (not illegally and not unfriendly be overly friendly overly nice - just sit on them so to other customers its a little unnerving. That's some previous advice I've seen work before) Separately cars are sold as seen so unsure that everything on your list couldn't have been picked up during your check before buying.. Just saying maybe don't expect all of it to be fixed
millar11
Sorry to hear this. I had a mk4 R32 for 5years and it never caused me any issue in the slightest. Just serviced it as and when required and it was great. As spunkmeyer said I would just go and make my presence felt and put them under a bit of pressure. JasonR24
Sorry to hear this mate. I had the same thing with a forum member no less. Screwed over a few members too so I know what it feels like. Best bet is to get this sorted asap, looks like you've taken the right course of action so far. Make sure they get it done and in future never pay up front
Big Supes
Garages can take months just to do the most basic jobs. I hope they don't take the Michael too much...

ManwithSupra
Have you thought about going to see the progress in person? Im sure a mate can give you a lift.
Spunkmeyer
doesn't that only apply to a private sale? Well to a degree, with used cars you get a mechanical short term warranty and depends on the garage and the conditions of sale but er not heated seats not unless you mentioned it at the time of purchase. Depends on the age and mileage of the vehicle as to what I would deem returnable. This is a personal opinion really - subjective and just my own opinion tbh. Yeah I'm sure this is not their fav top of the list job and certainly not making any money off it so.. Not difficult to see why it's taking so long.... But yeah they took it back so they should get on with it - a month would be my limit too
Al Massey
doesn't that only apply to a private sale? Not anymore, new consumer laws have got rid of that entirely for everything. The buyer is protected, even if you buy clothes from Facebook/selling sites. Sold as seen, even if written and signed means jack squat
Hitbox Junkie
Don't waste time just get it moved. If they don't get anything done in the next few months. But as said before usually cars are sold as seen. Any how's good luck hopefully trade and stardards will get involved for you
Guest Chris_jellyman
Cheers guys, I'm sure it'll get sorted soon it's just not ideal. I wasn't told about any of the problems, it's 2003 with 73,000 miles so I thought it was a solid one with decent mileage, none of the problems were mentioned otherwise i would have walked away from the sale. I spoke to trading standards and cars sold after October 2015 are protected under consumer rights, meaning the car has to be sold in a state fit for purpose, as advertised and in working order. And if it isn't the seller has the right to fix the problem and it is done and paid for by the garage, so I get why it isn't number one priority but I would have thought getting it done and out of the way would be the best idea. Oh well! Shame, it's a decent car and with the milltek exhaust it sounds amazing.
Dnk
Think it would be worth reading this before you buy a car http://www.autotrader.co.uk/content/how-does-the-consumer-rights-act-protect-you-when-you-buy-a-car
