CASHEYE
So basically my supra has been sitting on my drive for the last year. I parked it up because the front brakes were binding and as I had a work van to get around in so I wasn't in a rush to get it fixed. I basically used the brakes as an excuse to take the lights and dash out and have a play with them while it wasn't going anywhere. I had a friend service the callipers the other week and I took it to a garage to get it MOT'd but it still failed on the callipers. The only other point was an advisory on emissions so not too shabby. Anyway, the car is back to it's standard self now. I bought a replacement dash panel for the one i'd chopped up and it's got a set of refurbished (painted but no halos) facelift headlights and a brand new set of rear facelifts I bought the other week. Apart from a few scrapes (people like to say 'age related marks' but lets face it... they're still dings and scratches) on the quarters and wing mirrors it's a pretty straight car. I've bought myself another car which I'm totally infatuated with and if I had the choice of driving that or the supra... the supra wouldn't be going anywhere. So it needs to go. I know there's been a lot of hoo har with inflated prices being slapped on these basic models so I'm just looking for some advice on where to start. I got a quote from Steve Manley for a pair of new callipers at around £500 but is it worth spending the money to get it a clean MOT or just try and sell as it is. And if so.. What kind of price should I be looking at? I know people are probably going to ask for more information on the car to give an accurate price but I'm just looking for ball park here. It's all pretty standard apart from a set of wolfrace alloys with toyo t1 sports, a full set of alpine speakers and 88K on the clock. Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice. Dnk
You can get the front calipers professionally refurbished for under £150, that's what i'd do Search on here as a few members have had this done http://www.brakecaliperspecialists.uk/ http://www.biggred.co.uk/process.php http://www.brakecaliperrefurbs.co.uk/ http://www.custom-brake-calipers.co.uk/ Edited March 2, 2016 by Dnk (see edit history)
stevie_b
Is it manual or auto? Manual, I'd say stick it up for £4.5k. Auto, £3.5k? I'd find out what your friend did when he serviced the calipers for you. Not to point any fingers, but just so that you're not repeating any work that's already been done. Did he remove the pistons, inspect the parts and renew the seals? Did he check the slider pins moved freely? This is a common fault if they don't, and can cause the brakes to bind. It *might* be that this can be easily solved by removing the small rubber ring near the tip of the slider pins. Cheers dude. Is it manual or auto? Manual, I'd say stick it up for £4.5k. Auto, £3.5k? I'd find out what your friend did when he serviced the calipers for you. He didn't replace anything though as at the time, they seemed to be working fine. It was a favour so I'm not holding a grudge It's an auto yeah.
