Scooter
Whilst I have a good google, I'm just wondering if anyone has done the above, I'm not looking to keep the private reg, but it appears the private seller doesn't want to put it on retention and sort out all the document changes he wants to do it at the time of the sale? (there a cost benefit to him presumably?) Obviously preferable to me to just have it on a newly assigned normal plate and fresh V5 but is there really any risk doing it his way? Chris88
As I understand it only the owner of a plate and the car it's fitted to can put the plate on retention. If you try to do a vehicle transfer and a plate transfer at the same time something is bound to go wrong. If the owner wants the plate then he'll have to transfer it to anther vehicle or put it on retention before you buy it. If he doesn't want it you can do whatever you like (keep it, remove and surrender it or remove and sell it) after you own the car.

He wants it, I had a brief conversation with him and he sounds fine and the gist I got was that he'd give me the car and V5C with the private plate on and with the new standard reg plates too, then in a little while the new V5 would come through with the standard reg on and I just swap the plates and bin or send the private ones back to him? It would seem the risk is on him losing his plate wise, some hassle for me changing the insurance reg over and MOT may be too? I think I need to have another conversation when I'm not at work but want to try and see what his angle is before I do (does it save money doing this?), I'm naturally suspicious with all things car buying related and can't see why he wouldn't just swap it over now or before even advertising it? Stonkin
I had a similar situation a while ago. Was selling a car that I needed to keep the private plate for. If he sells you the car with the plate, technically you could say the plate belongs to you. But if you are willing to accept that he is keeping the plate then a V317 document can be filled out after you have bought the car. See this link for the form https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/409911/V317_211114.pdf It will cost him £80 to put the plate on retention. You just fill out the registered keepers details (you if you have bought the car), there is then a tickbox to say if you want to be the 'Grantee' (the person who has the right to the plate) of the plate, you tick no, and then list who you want the Grantee to be, ie, the previous owner. Hope this helps
Scooter
yes is does a lot thanks I've got the guy clocked as a genuine one but this aspect was starting to bug me because I was a little ignorant of the facts, feel better about proceeding, knowledge is power and all that!
