Hammer
The first time MOTEC made a big impact on the UK was a round of the World or European Touring Cars at Silverstone I attended, and where the Australian, Dick Johnson, wiped the floor with the UK and European Sierra Cosworth "specialists" with the little known MOTEC ecu in his remarkably well sorted self prepared Sierra Cosworth. It opened people's eyes in the UK and in Europe as to what those little gold boxes from down under could do compared to the hugely hacked about, complex and obsolete stuff they were running. That brings back some memories Chris. It was a real surprise that day to all the teams involved, that car was running as if in a different race. Jellybean
Sorry few Q's Whats the difference between an Oil breather and Oil catch tank ? what is the snout on that oil breather 50mm in diameter, thats huge no? The temp stickers on Brembo calipers on the Mercedes in your pics , would the guys not be running electric temp sensors? Why is Mercedes not running a Bosch ECU over a Motec? Chris Wilson
Big engine, lots of crankcase air movement, a big breather / oil seperator carries less oil mist out of the engine. They tended not to overcomplicate things, Brembo do endurance calipers that take a VERY thick pad, so pad changes are few and far between even over a 24 hour period. But they are reliable and all the testing will have been done, so they keep it simple and just use stickers I guess. It would have been on a custom Bosch but the things are donkeys years old, used bespoke software and they go wrong. The authorities saw the impracticality of trying to keep old ecu's going and allowed modern ons. Sometimes, for period looks they had a modern ecu inside the old (and usually HUGE) empty ecu casing. Most of the original Bosch software would have run under DOS or an obsolete version of Windows, too, or even have had a bespoke programming computer interface. Like personal computers, the processing speed of ecus has come on in leaps and bounds since the Group C cars were built.
Jellybean
Thanks, great to know! Taught they would be running a modern Bosch ECU!
Ian C
I actually recognise the name Dick Johnson from the Aussie V8 Supercars series, he runs a race team there, just teamed up with Penske.

crock
Ahh the 767, one of the best sounding cars to date! The scream of a na 4 rotor at 10k is really something else
Jellybean
I reckon they are tricky to map or at least you would be nervous , get a mis fire and a Rotary needs a rebuild ! I wonder who would foot the bill
