Can't Get Reverse

Recommended Posts

I've had a few problems with my clutch/box lately... reverse is tricky and I also have a short shifter. Not sure if the following will diagnose you problem but it might assist other 'in the know':

Does it help if you double-de-clutch? Can you feel it try to engage at all? How is the bite point on your clutch - is it very low? Any problems engaging other gears?

no problems with the other gears the cultch is o.k a bit heavy but it's been like that since i got the car a few weeks ago drove fine down to brighton yesterday got in today no reverse had to really force it in but once it goes in

it reverses fine the shifter seem to have a bit of free play may be it's that!

i'll need to have a good look when i get it on my ramp at work.

As the others said, definitely worth making sure you have v160 in there (Though, quite how you'd do that without changing the lot it is beyond me!)

"Play" in the shifter does not sound right at all. I've driven many, many 6 speeds and none have any 'play' at all. The shift should always be precise and "firm" (Agricultural is another word :D ). It is not a sloppy shift at all, even less so if you have a short shift fitted

It will probably be the linkage between the shifter and the gearbox that's a bit loose. There's a bolt that holds a U shaped braket on the gearbox end to the bottom of the shifter, the whole things covered by a rubber boot. Or it could be the reverse lock out screw that needs adjusting, which controls how far over the shift lever goes over before you lift the collar. Also check that the hole the shifter goes through has been filed out from a rectangular slot to a round hole or the shorter shift lever may be binding on it.

EDIT: Here's the instructions for the B&M short shift, should be able to see what I mean...
