2017 VED Changes

Talk about moving the goal posts, what an utter rip off for those wanting to get a new motor in 2017. My understanding is that it does not effect current cars\tax prices.

Struggling to find how much VED tax was raised in 2015, in 2009 they nearly raised £6 billion, over £40 BILLION a year is raised through both VED and fuel duty and check this out, this comes under "general taxation" which means it is not necessarily marked for road repairs and maintenance. Could be used for paying interest off hefty loans or for cleaning moats, £2,000 to paint a lamp post etc

Haha, I thought it was all allocated to road works but it appears not, we could be paying for the £150k PA Pickles was spending on buying biscuits for his council office.

So..... if I wait until 2022 (coincidently the same year my current contract with my employer is up and I recieve a hearty lump sum payment on completion) I can buy a 5 year old FT-1 or New Supra or whatever they end up calling it, and only pay £140 a year VED.....

None of it is anymore.

All roads come under local councils.

Councils get a grant as well as use their money from tax

I think you are fine the new rules are only for new cars after the deadline. So they are saying it's worth buying car like you have before the deadline, but high emission cars like 911 turbo's etc after..

I'm slightly less annoyed.

It's a shame they didn't do anything about the older cars some 2006 on cars will just get wasted (scrapped early) due to £500 pa tax......they could have put a >10 year old £300 cap or something as there will be loads of usable cars getting scrapped early as their price/age falls into the poorer owners affordability, but the £500 tax means they will just be unwanted by anyone.

 

I don't think 500 tax will put many enthusiasts off,its only a tenner a week.Consider what some folk spend on fags and booze a week ,definatley won't put me off .

When you put it that way the cost sounds a lot more justifiable!

It's not the enthusiast type car/owner I'm thinking of really, it's the run of the mill/good usable old cars that will be cast aside in the future because of the annual tax approaching 25-50% of the cars value. It isn't really the new rules condemning these types of car, it's the old ones! but it would have been a good time imo to cap the old ones too.

Depends how many old cars you'd like to collect. Not daily runners, just occasional fun use.
