Intercooler piping

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if its possible to buy piping for a Greddy Intercooler separately or would I need to go custom made?

The intercooler itself is fine but the piping is ugly as hell (custom made) so I want to change them.

I'm not at all sure what kind of price tag I should expect to see on custom made piping if I need to take that route.

You can buy cheap intercooler piping kits from China but they'll probably need modifying to fit your model of GReddy FMIC, the silicone couplers and jubilee clips may be poor quality and need replacing. You'll need to check if the kit is for the stock side mount IC or front mount IC.

Is there any downside to using a cheap piping kit? I mean they are only pipes right? Would they be prone to easy damage or anything?

Replacing the couplers and clips is no issue. :)

Low boost applications will probably be fine for the cheap kits. I'm running cheap pipework at 1bar, no problems so far. Once you start to build up to and exceed 1.5bar or so you'll see pipes starting to blow off. The more expensive kits have lips on the pipework for the silicone couplers to go over which helps hold them once they've been clamped on by whatever means.

Hairspray is good for keeping the cheap pipework on as well though :D

Well I don't mind paying a bit extra for a decent set. Im curious as to how much work is involved in modifying kits to fit and who can do them. I'm trying to fit together a cost estimate. :)

I'm running 1.2 bar on stock turbos so shouldn't be too much of an issue nevertheless.

I don't have any experience of the kits so don't know what the quality is like. The alu pipes should have swaged ends (the raised rim at the ends of the pipes), these help the silicon couplers seal and hold under pressure.

Just noticed that Whifbitz do their own FMIC piping kit http://www.garagewhifbitz.co.uk/toyota/supra/intercoolers/garage-whifbitz-414.html
