Selling a car without private plate

Need some help in relation to selling my car. I currently have a private plate on my car that I plan on keeping.

My question is how do I go about this? I know I can put it on retention but can I do this after the car has sold, and if not how long does it take to transfer the plate off the car. I want to avoid removing it until the car sells as I would want to keep the car if I don't get the asking price. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You can't do it after sale to my knowledge

You have to put it on retention and they allocate a new number for the car, it takes about a week for you to receive the document so you can go and get new plates made

The new owner needs tohe new plates to be able to drive it away

You could ask the buyer to do this after sale, but that could be risky if they can't be arsed once they have the car

The man is correct. If it's sold before you apply for new plates, once new owner has signed the V5 (with the private reg on) it's as good a his.

If you can find a local DVLA office, few n far between now, it's quicker to walk in and do it over the counter, they'll give you so documents to enable you to get plates made that day, think they still take the V5 off you though.

Was faced with this last week when looking at a car,guy wanted to change number after I bought the car.My worry was if I insured the car on the private plate I would then have extra costs to change the reg on my insurance when new reg was allocated.I also wondered what happens about m.o.t if it had new plate issued !

Didn't buy the car as it wasn,t as described anyway.

An MOT can (or definitely *COULD*) be issued against a VIN number and not a registration number. I sold a truck once to a guy who promised on everything holy he would work with me to transfer my late mother's (and sentimentally valuable) private plate off the truck and onto a car of mine. He welched, but like an elephant I do not forget...

You can do this once the car is sold, using a V317 Document from the DVLA website (https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/409911/V317_211114.pdf), I did so last week. But, I would say you need a good understanding between you and the new owner to ensure he will be 'cooperative ' with the paper work after the sale.

If in any doubt do so before sale.

I'm a number plate dealer & we suffered when it was announced that all the DVLA offices will be shutting down. Nevertheless, in the last month or so DVLA have launched an online website! https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number. The process has now become so much easier..., rather than having to send numerous docs off to DVLA SWANSEA, you can retain/transfer a plate across within a few minutes via the Directgov site online.
