SilentAgro
Hi all, I have looked through the forum for a few hours now, but not able to find details of what it could be as nearly all of the posts are about TT's My NA has an occasional running problem. It stutters and cuts out. This happens when its either hot, cold, at idle or driving at speed. I thought it was dizzy cap so had a full service done on the car, it seems to still do it. What are common causes of an erratic running engine? Many thanks
David P
Have you checked for any fault codes?

SilentAgro
I'm thinking its the ECU. How do I check the fault codes?
SilentAgro
14 and 42 do seem like the ones it could be as it does it all over the rev range.

Konrad
I would check fuel filter when you are at it and small filter on fuel pump.
SilentAgro
anndd now the car doesn't even start. It's not flashing any code up. Although with my Auto, it flashes the Over drive orange light. Is that right?
Scooter
Try and be more descriptive.......when it doesn't start, does it turn over rapidly but not catch, turn over slowly, not turn over at all, lights on the dash, no lights in the dash etc.....help us to help you! SilentAgro
Hi Scooter, It was starting over like normal, just wasn't catching this morning. Just tried it again and it started but was erratic again. Smoothed out, took it for a drive no issues. Then when I got back, it cut out. Tried the paperclip thing in the diagnostic port and it flashed consistently, but on the O/D off light.
Konrad
Flashing OD light usually means dodgy converter, but it should not really affect start or idling. Might be also speed sensor. If there is no engine light on, I would start from fuel, might be some dirt clogging filter and then falls off when car cuts out.
boostman
Sounds like the ecu, if you can get your hands on one just to test it will quickly confirm if that's the problem. I had a Mines Ecu that was how you describe, unpredictable lol
