Suspension & Brake system overhaul - help!

Nah mate, people are still preoccupied with dropping 2 grand on coilovers and body kits, or turbo-ing an NA, and asking 'whats the biggest wheels I can fit m9' rather that put cash into important things like suspension health ;)

 

That's what you get for hanging out on the VIP drift barge forum :p

I think it's just me but I'm really conscious that I'm driving a 21/22 year old car, although it hasnt hit 100k miles yet (close, 96ish) I just figure some of these suspension parts are going to be worn out, it's spent 14 years of it's life in the UK. Its been looked after to a decent standard but not much has been done to it for a while by the looks of things (in terms of replacing/upgrading parts) although it has always been regularly serviced and it had a major service at Whifbitz when I first purchased. I think I'll be close to having to change the belts soon, pulleys are looking a little worn too.

 

They are well built but I want to keep this car for the long term and figure replacing this type of stuff is much more important to keeping it nice in the long term, it will be pricey but worth it to feel the difference and be close to the brand new driving feel.

Indeed, one only as to look how the Wanted section here has changed over the years.

Toyota don't supply the bushes (which are actually proper spherical bearings in a waterproof rubber outer seal) or the ball joints. You have to buy new arms complete. Some people press out the stock "bushes! and fit plastic bushes from the likes of Superpro. This is a very backward step, there's a very good reason Toyota used spherical bearings in this location. HTH, how are things?

At £36 a pair it has to be worth a go, I would try and see what's inside one and post a high res set of photos. You'll need a press and o make some tooling to get the old ones out and the new ones in though.

Chris, would you be able to look into having a complete kit made if there was enough interest or would the cost be too prohibitive?

 

I wouldn't have a clue who could do suitable copy parts, but I'd bet they have yellow skin and like rice. Not worth it, you'll probably find Chinatown comes up with something when Toyota stop supplying, God knows what it will be like though.

Thanks for the replies, that's a good thread.

 

Here are screens of the manual showing rear upper arm bushings replacement. Only this and the rear "strut rod" bushings are shown replaceable. So it looks like for the rest the complete arms need to be purchased.

The only reference I can find for the upper arm bushings are made by Febest, as Scooter linked. They have two references, TAB472RUB and TAB472Z (pictured in order). They also have references for other bushings not shown being replaceable by the manual.

Any idea what could be the difference between the two?
