Converting from auto to 6 speed manual (bmw Gearbox)

Right guys,

I have seen people converting their auto Supra's into the 6 speed manual that is found in BMW's M3 e46 Gatreg gearbox. I have seen a for sale add recently on the Facebook (Toyota Supra parts for sale Europe) page, with a Supra with this conversion, I was wondering if anyone on here has some experience doing this or know exactly what parts I would need to complete this conversion as I am very interested in going down this route.

Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I have asked the guy on the add already but he says the previous owner had done this so he couldn't help me.

Cheers,

Rob

Right guys, after getting in contact with gyrodrift i spoke with Frazer who seemed to be the man in charge. They do a conversion kit for £900 but you will still need to get gearbox and clutch pedal. Although for a fee of £2,200 they will fit it for you with all parts included.

i have decided to do this plus upgrade to a standalone ECU (running Blue Greddy Piggy back at the moment) to a Link ecu. they will fit it all and map it with anti lag and launch control and Traction control for a very fair fee of £4000 total with the gearbox conversion!!

The Gearbox he recomended was from a BMW 330d, which is the route i will be going down.

He said the only draw back is that the gearbox can be a bit noisy but the car is soo bloody loud i doubt i would hear it anyways haha! He also mentioned that the gearbox's operation will be alot smoother than that of a v160 but i cant judge on that as i havent personally driven a 6 speed supra before.

looks like my car may be going in end of march but will keep you all updated.

They don't! 2.47 on 330d vs 3.6 on the supra big case diff.

They're fine if you like doing a ton at 2k and not having the power to pull the skin off a rice pudding in anything other than 1st.

im not to sure what that means then if the diff ratio's dont match. what would happen?

Apparently because diesel gearbox's are? Well thats what he said.

I drive a friend's 330D mnanual regularly, and it has a silent transmission. It will be "noisy" for one of 3 reasons. It's knackered, it doesn't have the right dual mass flywheel, it doesn't have the right dampened clutch plate or dampening in the propshaft, if 330D's have a dampened clutch plate or a dampened propshaft.

PLEASE find out what the ratio of the gearbox's top gear is. Often diesel's are one to one and rely on something like 2.9 to 1 diff ratio for a sensible cruise RPM and top speed. You need a LOT more facts from Mr. Frazer.

I am building a fun classic Volvo for myself, and it will have a none OE gearbox. It won't be noisy, and it will have a sensible spread of ratios. Achieving it is not trivial, and rarely cheap. Tread warily.

Please post up a build thread on the forum :)

It will be a cheap and cheerful shell ( I just bought a LHD 1987 740 estate, LHD ones don't have that PITA steering column where a big turbo wants to go...) and a nice engine, gearbox and suspension. If I like it I will probably import a totally rust free 2 door 240 roller, or maybe a 940 roller, in white, from a dry US state. I just missed one two weeks back, it's gone from Arizona back to where it was made, Sweden.

Just bought a brand new engine block, and about to order a stroker crank and rods and a new head casting. Accumulating other stuff as and when I see a bargain.

The wife drove the 740 back from the pub last night, and thinks I have finally gone off my head. Hideous, old man's car, wallowing rattling shed, embarrassing, eyesore, get it round the back. I got the lot. I was quite flattered, she has appalling taste in cars ;) In the pub she asked me if I was going to sell some of the other "junk" about the place. I had to dash to the toilet in fear of wetting myself laughing. Going from 87 tech N/A 2.3 to a 2.8 all steel turbo lump should waken the thing up, if not tear the back axle out of it...

I'll try and get some photos once things get going. It's a sideline project, I just loved my old turbo 244 and how only my best mate, who was more often pissed than sober, was the only person who would be a passenger in it more than once. I hadn't much money and couldn't afford a decent gearbox, so I had changing scrap yard 4 speeders down to a fine art. I think I destroyed about 4 boxes, always third gear, toothless like a Moss Side crack addict.

Great stuff

I was at a local trackday at Elvington (before all the nimbys moved in and stopped them :( ), and someone turned up in an ex works Volvo 480 race car. I have no ideal what discipline it was used in, but you could tell this car hadn't been slapped together in someones shed. It ran rings around everything else, including the Caterhams, Porches etc. It's a shame the road going versions are so poorly put together, because the 480 turbo is a lot of fun for a FWD hatch.
