np89
Slower to rev in normal driving unless using manual or kickdown surely? I certainly found that with mine. Not using kickdown or manual mode it certainly did take some time to build the boost
j_jza80
That's engine response, not turbo spool. And the effect you describe is probably more to do with the gearing in autos.
np89
Surely the turbo spool is directly correlated to the engine response which is turn is entirely dependant on the gearing of the autobox?
j_jza80
No in fact, i believe that taller gearing actually assists in turbo spool, because as Dude put it, it "loads the engine up" Besides, a slower revving engine must have an advantage of extra exhaust gas flow over one that reaches a common engine rpm point quicker, so spool (measured by boost pressure v engine rpm) and therefore positive boost should come earlier if anything. np89
Oh ok. Must just have simply been the size of the housing then. Ok so vote for .86 housing then!

bignum
Np89, you are correct, because of the longer gearing of the 4spd autobox it takes the engine longer to get through the revs which in turn will make a bigger turbo feel laggy, i know this because i fitted an auto diff on mine (6 spd) and the turbo feels much more responsive, basically gets through the revs quicker so gets on boost quicker, obviously i`m changing gear like stirring a pot of curry but thats all part of the fun. np89
Thanks bignum. I thought i was but didnt want to get into an argument on someone elses thread!
j_jza80
Thanks bignum. I thought i was but didnt want to get into an argument on someone elses thread! Bignum just said exactly what i was saying
np89
Lol in what way? You told me i was wrong and then stated the auto shud "load up the engine" and give better spool and bignum said i was right for the reasons i stated
j_jza80
As bignum said, and i said before, its the gearing making the engine feel less responsive that is the reason for the difference between manual and auto. If the gear ratios were the same on two cars with identical turbo setups, but one auto and one manual, they would both make the same boost at say 3000rpm in the same gear ratio. Boost pressure vs engine rpm is the measure of 'spool', not how many seconds it takes to get there.
T2 MSW
Also used to run the boost lab S366 with a 91 housing. Was fine for me as was on track use but on the road the larger housing felt laggy. Id go for the 86 and sacrifice a bit at the top end for a faster responsive turbo.

JackyBoi
There's also a supplier near me (in the UK!) that does them pretty cheap. Who is this supplier?

Wez
Are these vanilla / stock BW turbos, if I recall some suppliers were doing billet / modded units. http://www.bullseyepower.com/products/BatMoWheel-Turbochargers/ http://www.full-race.com/store/turbos/borgwarner-airwerks/ http://www.theboostlab.com/store/categories/Tax-Refund-Sale/Borg-Warner/ Edited January 28, 2016 by Wez (see edit history)
