So I'm currently riding a Honda hornet 600 and loving it!

Looking to the future, I'd love a bigger bike.

I think I'm pretty close to being dead set on a zx10r but I'd like to hear your opinions on the big bikes.

What have you ridden and what do you currently ride?

What bikes would you recommend?

I was actually looking at the 04/05 model. Would you not say it had more character to it?

I want a bike I can really grow into and respect rather than jump on and be over confident on. I know that they dumbed down the zx10r for the mass market and that the 04/05 was an award winning bike.

I would love a ducati but I don't think I could afford the breakdowns and the supra addiction...

The 0405 zx10r is full of character sure.maybe take a test ride first and see if you like it. I'm biased to yamaha so i would recommend an r1 instead. Take note though from 04 the r1 got bigger and is nowhere near as light as the 98-03 models. Also if moving up to a super bike do yourself a favour and go to a track school. You learn heaps from just one day. I've been riding for more than 20 years and only recently went on a track day. The knowledge you get is priceless!

Tomy, what are you stats mate (size, weight, height etc) and what do you want the bike for? There's no point (as an example) in you choosing a Zx10 if you're a giant.

6ft 63kg 21

I tend to end up on the motorway but I'd like to do some track days.

There's nothing wrong with my hornet.... I just feel too comfortable on it and would like to ride somthing more challenging.

Nice looking bike, I love the exhaust!

I am a little worried about the reliability of bmws, suzukis and ducatis... So the cost of running is a consideration.

Never had any problems with my GSXR'S, there normally bulletproof unless you have heard something i have not heard of .. I know Ducati's had issues in the past but a mate of mine has a 1198s and never missed a beat

mine is a toy anyway so if something does happen its really not a issue

I've only heard horror story's from the older bikes, uncle had an 03 ish gsxr and the gearbox split on him spilling oil over the exhaust.

Also had a couple friends with electrical gremlins...

I think I just need to test ride a few bikes to find what I'm after.

With them being more of a toy the cost of insurance is a factor I need to look at too.

Sounds good. How about saving your dosh and buying a £2-3k machine from a slightly older era. You'll get the performance and the build quality for the most. How about a YZF Thunderace with its extreme power unit. Very nice indeed, or, you could go for a meaty bike like an Aprilia RSV or Suzuki TLR. If you want something really nippy and fairly agile then a ZX12R is something quite special.

That being said, you need to have the mental state and maturity to be able to control these machines or they'll turn you into hedgehog meat by nights end.

Wouldn't recommend an aprilia rsv mille. They are known to have electrical gremlins.

If it's around 04/05 year bikes can I suggest the Gsx-R 1000 K5. It's was the best package bike for that time and for a couple of years after that it was still the one to beat. 1000cc and packed into the frame size of a 600. I owned one for a few years and it was one of the best bikes I've ever owned and never had an issue with reliability. 97mph in 1st gear top of 3rd was about 155 and it just begged for more. They used the K5 as a platform for the new Bmw 1000rr.

Sorry for the thread bump, but im looking at bikes again and cant make up my mind...

Looking to spend 3-4k, something from around 2002 - 20006. Really fancy a GSXR 750 but keep looking at the 1000's too. My last sports bike was a ZX9R, so i keep thinking that i'll miss the low end torque of a 750 and so the 1000 will be a better bet, but that said, the 1000 maybe a bit mental! It will mainly be used as a weekend toy, would love to do a track day or 2, and this is the kicker, the Mrs wants to jump on the back for short trips out too. So maybe would I be better going for something like a Hayabusa? or would a GSXR whilst not ideal be OK for 2 up for the odd short trip out?

I've also looked at FZ1's and CB1000R's which look like fun street fighters... and round and round I go. Unfortunately I dont have the £££ for a different bike for each occasion so I need something that's going to entertain and do a few different jobs.

Cheers

Got the week off to look at bikes, still not decided between 750 or 1000 so any thoughts welcome...

Just as an update, I haven't replaced my hornet.

Personally I feel that I would benefit from riding a 600 longer especially now I'll be using it less on the motorways, so there's no real need for a bigger bike.

Like Jay asked, where will you spend most of your time with the bike?

Have you test riden any bikes?

I only use mine as a weekend toy ...

I took a few people out on my 750 GSXR ... It's ok but I don't like having people on the back .. IMO If it's just for the odd short trip I would just worry what bike you want then worrying about passengers lol

My old 750 k4 GSXR was good fun, handled really well in the bends but it wasn't long until I wanted a 1000. I would not worry about the 1000 being too mental as once you got one it won't take you long to start making it faster too 😉

If you want to do a track day I recommend Ron Haslem race school at Donnington race track ... I done the 600cc which was £299 and was bloody brilliant for my first track day ... Bike included and they even provide you with all the gear if you don't have leathers too. Doing the 1000 in June which is £399 but you can't do it until you do the 600s
