Oculus Rift VR Headset

Oculus are starting to take pre-orders for their first public release in about 15 minutes time :)

Anyone interested in getting one of these/had one of the developers kits? I've been sort of keeping an eye on things as I think it would be great for sim racing.

Thinking I'll give it a few months at least to see what the reviews (and prices!) are like before considering one. Very trick bit of kit though [COOL][/COOL]

Been following the progress for a while, almost purchased the dev kit a few times but was put off by them selling off old versions when they already had a newer model they were showing off at shows etc.

Should be good although the HTC Steam unit looks just as good but with Steam backing.

Same here... but they've announced the dev backers will get a free production model. How I wish I'd got one at the start now!

One of my friends picked up a Dev kit and said it was pretty good. Rough around the edges and maybe lacking a little in performance but all that could be expected from a Dev kit. Will look at the HTC unit and see what it looks like, not really looked into that one much :)

Sony's unit is looking like it'll be up there too. It's gonna turn into a brand market I reckon. PC only for some units and PS4 for the other etc. just like sim racing hardware which really frustrates me. There will be so many games I'd like to try with this but will be limited by console :(

Didn't know that, would've been a good investment! :(

Waiting for the HTC Vive myself. The tech in it looks far better (i.e. you can switch to a camera mode so you can see the actual world around you to sit down, pick up the phone/a drink/etc) and can track you anywhere in a room up to 15x15 ft, as opposed to the Rift which has basic head tracking. I've used them, and it's okay at best. The Vive is supposed to be a 'premium' VR experience and was always expected to be more expensive than the Rift, but it looks like they might be more similarly priced than expected!

I had the DK2 dev kit for a while last year. Honestly the tech works very well, and tracking is very precise. the only letdown was the low resolution of the dev kit screens. If the new productions kits have a higher resolution without hindering frame rates then this should be the start of the future. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

$600 is a just way to expensive and you have to have 3 USB 3 ports and at least a GTX970 GPU.. PFFT!

So make Sure you have an additional £250 for a new GPU

Fair Price absolutely not

Nvidea say only 13m out of 1.43 billion on PC can run this..

You have to bare in mind when the UK price WONT be converted from US dollars to UK pounds so will will be something even more stupid like £500 for it.. Just like anything else sold in the UK compared to the american market.

This is were Sony need to think about what they will do with the pricing of there VR, and its a plug and play into the PS4 with no need for a high end gaming PC.

Just my opinion along with thousands of other Pc users and a majority of the big youtube gamers, boogie, stonefox, review tech usa ect ect

Very true, however this tech is still in it's infancy

Whilst the upcoming release is marketing as 'production', most consumers won't buy into it as it is still quite a niche thing. Not only is the hardware new and power crazy, the software and VR developers will also need time to produce mainstream level content. Currently there is interesting tech demo's and some early level media, but it will be a while till AAA titles and proper media experiences are developed.

Give the enthusiasts and developers more time to go through the early stages of refining the process and I'm sure in a few years the tech will be ready for your average consumer. That is what I'm hoping will be the proper time to get excited about this

Totally agree. We always need to move further with tech. Will it fail ? We will have to see.

Providing PS VR is reasonable I will give it a go but it will most probably get as much use and my 3D TV, which is another thing which is a questionable piece of tech that it will succeed for home entertainment. We all have it on new TV's but how many of use use it? lol

I love the idea of VR but the price was just absolutely shocking

$1500 is eye watering! It was looking to be the superior one so I guess they had the top end in mind all along

Indeed, I believe it comes with two room mounted trackers so you can walk around and also has a head mounted cam that can relay real world data back to the user.
