Jumping out of drive on autobox

Hi, I have recently replaced the oil filter for the auto box and upgraded from a stock rad to a Whifbitz one which needs a separate autobox oil cooler (also fitted) filled up the fluid (as per repair manual) and I'm now having some issues.

When I'm in Drive the gear seems to "slip" out of gear and into neutral and then back again after a few seconds (doesn't seem to be a set time frame) this normally happens when I am sat in a queue or slowing down to a halt.

I have checked for error codes and I get nothing.

Anybody any ideas

Thanks

It sounds like you are low on transmission fluid. Remember you will need more oil than standard since you are running an external oil cooler. Check the fluid level properly to be sure.

From my past experience, it takes just less than a quart of oil extra to fill the trans cooler (I'm running a Mishimoto external transmission oil cooler)

If the ATF is not up to correct level that could be the problem.

The TPS requires accurate setting or it could be causing the problem.

Neither of the above will show a fault code.

You have found the Japanese Workshop Manual which has the correct settings, the English version Manual has incorrect values.

Search around and you'll find the English WS Manual version for instruction and use the Jap Manual values.

Stick a feeler gauge of given size under an un-tampered with throttle stop and check for continuity on/off position between the top two terminals on TPS and nip up the screws.

If you have dicked with the throttle stop too, you will have lost the datum point and be in the land of guess measurey.

Thanks and my bad I miss read the manual I read it as the oil should be at 70-80° and level at cold instead of

use cold as a rough reference when the engine does not run

Or drive the car until it reaches operating temp 70-80°

Thanks I'm glad you mentioned it otherwise I would have done it wrong.

So if I drive to work (aprox. 2.6miles) it should be at operating temp giving me an accurate reading where I can check the oil level and adjust the tps sensor if required

oh and you can check it when cold as well. What I do is usually with two people but one person could work. Start engine and select gears R, D, 2, 1, N, R, D then back to N before checking the oil level. This allows all the valves/ solenoids to open and fill with oil before getting the level.

Okay so I checked the oil level at work and had to top it up engine was at operating temp when I did this can't say I had noticed it happen after this.

But that being said it stopped for a while the other night when the car was at operating temp but the problem came back when the car had cooled down.

I also selected every gear Inc. Park before checking the oil just went a basic up and down gearbox. If the problem persists I will use the gear pattern as stated above and then check oil level again.

I am going to have to do this on Friday morning when I get time but in the meantime it looks like I'll have to walk to work and back
