Wjswingler
I am a named driver on my fathers policy (I use the car for weekends as I work away during the week) and the car has gone into the garage due to slave cylinder and clutch being replaced. As I am driving to Edinburgh in a few days, my mechanic gave me his car to drive. As I am only a named driver and nearly 21, am I insured to drive the vehicle? Also, I've done a reg check on his car and it's got expired tax from 1st December. I know cars legally need to be taxed but is there anything that might suggest that I can drive it without tax? Would I personally get penalized if I get pulled?
supra joe
I very much doubt it. His car will have traders insurance which you won't be insured on either. So not only will you get done for no insurance or tax when it flags up on ANPR.... But you will have his car impounded or worse ! - - - Updated - - - That's if he even has a traders policy lol. supra joe
You need to be fully comprehensive on your own policy to be able to drive other people's cars as third party... And that's an option only some insurance company's offer these days I believe.
Abz
Most insurance companies only allow the policy holder to be able to drive other cars which are insured. Example I can drive other cars but my wife who is named on the policy can not. Best to check with the insurer, also another insurance company I was with you had to be 25+ to drive other cars. Havard
Ring your insurance and check and ask the garage owner why his car has no tax..!! You may have to take out a temporary policy to be covered. H.
Wjswingler
Thanks guys, I've spoken to the mechanic. He wasn't aware his tax hadn't auto renewed so it's taxed now. Still don't think I'm insured though I'll have to ring tomorrow
